LEANA SONG: "A Philadelphian Drum and Song Ensemble"FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Shawn Hennessey Tel: 267.252.5898 Email: [email protected] Website: www.leanasong.com www.myspace.com/leanasongLEANA SONG: PHILADEPHIA’S OWN WORLD MUSIC COLLECTIVE RELEASES ITS DEBUT CD: “ORISHA LOVE SONG’S VOL.1” Album release party @ Silk City with DJ Frosty – 08/08/08 “Orisha Love Songs Vol.1” offers a completely unique sound and is a testament of what is to come as the world begins to really hear each other’s music. On a foundation of Cuban Batá drums, Leana combines the traditional call and response Yoruba song forms, with modern folk/jazz instruments and harmony. They succeed in creating dynamic and complex soundscape, enticing the listener to dance, sing, and drum along. They roll through song cycles, rising and falling with intensely hypnotic grooves, supporting a wealth of ancient melodic phrases. “Orisha Love Songs Vol.1” can be compared to the very best examples of contemporary world music fusion i.e. the most recent solo album of Miguel Diaz “ANGA”, Marlon Simon’s “In Case You Missed It”, Chris Berry and Panjea’s “Shine”. With elements of jazz, folk, and world music, “Orisha Love Songs Vol.1” has a sound that needs to be heard.LEANA SONG: PHILADEPHIA’S OWN WORLD MUSIC COLLECTIVE RELEASES ITS DEBUT CD: “ORISHA LOVE SONG’S VOL.1”Official CD release party in Philadelphia on 08/08/08 @ Silk City - 435 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia Two Shows! 9pm and 11pm - $8 Admission and CD - $15 If you would like more information about Leana Song please send inquiries to [email protected] or go to www.leanasong.com or www.myspace.com/leanasong.Contact: Shawn Hennessey / Leana Song / 267.252.5898 [email protected]

Influences: Leana Song is inspired by traditional Ghanaian drum and song, alongside tradional Afro-Cuban Drum and Song, expressed through American folk and jazz mediums. I was first attracted to Lucumí songs at various Afro-Cuban dance classes in Boston in 2000. Having been a songwriter for many years, I became interested in the song structure, the melodic movement, and the deceptive cadence of orisha song. As time passed and I became more familiar with the batá drumming, I began to see how the songs “dressed” the drumming. I began to hear music differently and, in fact, I began to hear this music everywhere. The melodies on this record have been sung by millions of people over generations, across oceans, under brutal conditions. They have survived in the hearts and minds of the international Yoruba community, but most importantly they lasted because they were sounded. These songs were born of mankind, and as they developed they slowly connected and changed, just like any living thing. They are on a path, a path that has led you, and we are connected.
Sounds Like:The band sounds like the contemporary works of Miguel "ANGA" Diaz and Grupo Ilu Ana
Type of Label: Major
