Bessie Mae Armstrong Hinton, born August 29, 1916 in Old Augusta, Mississippi to the late Evelyn and Henry Armstrong. Mother Hinton received her education in the Old Augusta Public Schools. She had a love for reading and writing. Mother was her class valedictorian. Mother Armstrong was married to the late Rev. Woodrow Hinton. To this union ten children were born. Mother Armstrong was reared in a Christian home and accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age. She would affectionately tell the story of how Rev. Hinton introduced her to the Church of GOD in Christ. Mother worked as a private sitter in hospitals in New Orleans and Slidell, Louisiana. Bessie Mae moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1968 and she united with Jerusalem Church of GOD in Christ under the Leadership of Pastor Elder Albert Breckenridge. Mother worked faithfully at Jersalem, serving as a church Mother, leader of the Saturday morning prayer, she was on the committee to visit the sick and shut-in, she was a part of the committee that visited the homeless shelters, and fed the homeless. She loved the church and she loved GOD's people. She enjoyed telling people about the Lord, praying for people and encouraging them to live Holy. She spent endless hours fasting and praying over others prayer requests. Bessie Mae was the epiphany of Godly Love. Mother moved to Pontiac, Michigan, September 1, 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. She united with the GOD's Holy Temple Church of GOD in Christ, under the leadership of Elder Jimmy L. Jones. She served at GOD's Holy Temple COGIC until the Lord called her home on October 1, 2006. "Ms. Betty" was well known in her community after becoming a Widow. Active in her Church, She sold Fish Sandwiches, Hamburgers and Hot Dogs for a Dollar to help support her Church Auxillaries from the kitchen of her Calliope Housing Project Apartment. Mother cooked food for the sick and visited them, helped anybody in Need. She raised four sets of Grandchildren who called her "Mother Dear". Mother was a Survivor of Hurricane Katrina but lost everything. She was proceeded in death by both parents, her husband, 3 children, 5 brothers, 5 sisters, 2 son-in-laws, and 2 grandchildren. Bessie Mae Armstrong leaves to cherish her memory 7 children, 31 grandchildren, 80 great-grand children, 15 great, great grandchildren, 3 son-in-laws, 3 daughter-in-laws, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She leaves one devoted friend, Mother Jackson of New Orleans. She made each one of her children and grand children as well as the greats feel Special and Loved.
