Kanari (pronounced "Kah nah ree"), meaning "Guitars" in a language spoken by the Huicholes (an indigenous tribe from Jalisco and Nayarit in Mexico), is being introduced into the modern world as an iconic name for the band KANARI of San Diego, CA. The core band members consisting of brothers Fernando & Gabriel Garcia and Antonio Econom are the perfect blend of flavors that form their unique sound-a fusion of Rock, Reggae and Latin Jazz. The versatile delivery of their music in both Spanish and English enables the band to reach a wider span of listeners that will succumb to the good music and surely become new, adoring fans. The musical foundations that Kanari finds as inspiration, have set the mood comes from their cultural background and given them a blank canvas onto which songs have been forever painted with a brush depicting a sense of desperation, love and forgiveness.
Fernando Garcia (Vocals/Bass Guitar) discovered his love for music as a child when his parents bought him a keyboard for his birthday. Much to their surprise, Fernando adapted to the keyboard right away, and within weeks began to teach himself the fundamentals of music. His parents were amazed at his ability to hear a song once or twice before playing it on the keyboard. His perseverance and commitment to music is a direct reflection of the lessons he has learned in life and he allows that to come through in his playing.
Gabriel Garcia (Lead Guitar/Vocals) discovered his passion for music at an early age. He recalls that his first experience with music was when an indigenous man (native to Mexico), gave him a guitar (a kanari). Since then, his passion for music has only strengthened. He mastered the art of Flamenco/Folkloric guitar while studying in Spain and the application of his new skills is evident in the band's music. Gabriel is now a full-time music major and teacher, dividing his time amongst researching, writing, and teaching music as well as keeping faithful to Kanari.
Antonio Econom (Drums/Percussion) was raised in a family rich in musical traditions. He was exposed to an array of styles ranging from Latin folklore to Classical to Rock at a very young age, as his band mates were. These genres of music have greatly influenced Tony’s playing. It has allowed him to bring a new texture to Kanari (which believes the greatest ensembles have the most solid foundation beginning with the drums). A perfect match has been made where philosophies, on music and life, are shared and a confidence in Kanari is seen and heard.
