Ronald Boersen

About Me


Ronald Boersen, born 1980 in the Netherlands, is a violist, composer and improviser of contemporary (electro-acoustic) music. He has completed both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in composition and live-electronics at the Institute of Sonology with Paul Berg and Joel Ryan. He studied viola at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Qui van Woerdenkom, Liesbeth Steffens and Ferdinand Erblich. Ronald also studied composition with Martijn Padding and Yannis Kyriakides. His works have been featured at the Cadance Festival and been performed at such venues as the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, Steim (Amsterdam, NL), Korzo Theater (The Hague, NL), Okno (Brussels, BE), The Teiva (Tel-Aviv, IL) and ZKM (Karlsruhe, DE). One of his ongoing projects is FreeQ, an open format improvisation ensemble, experimenting with live-electronics and interactivity. Performances have featured Emlyn Stam, Federico Reuben, Yoni Silver, Helen Thompson, Terri Hron and Rara Avis. Other highlights have included performances with Joel Ryan, collaborations with Dganit Elyakim, workshops and lectures about improvisation and live-electronics given at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague as well as a presentation of his work at the Electronic Studio Basel (CH). Ronald also composed the soundtrack for a documentary featured at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Viewpoints of a Mechanical Mind

This piece explores the composed score, guided improvisation/open composition and free imrpovisation, respectively represented by the pianist, the boxed ensemble and an invisible autonomous and interactive computer system.
The piece is set in a theatrical setting designed by Judith van Oostrum and Zoe Reddy and has been performed by the MAE ensemble as part of the project "Haagse Hemelbestormers" of the Korzo Theatre.

A contrasting multi- layered dance piece of passive and active interactivity.
The performance consists of a live solo dancer with a sensor-suite, a projected video and live-electronics in a quadraphonic setup.

An exploration of my Planetary Simulation Model as a self-interacting musical entity.
The piece is made for a metal plates and plexiglas construction with live-synthesized sounds, sonic driven and activated coils, and a live-animation projected overtop.
