Syd is a fabulous enigma. Like the Scarlet Pimpernel he seems both damned and elusive . And like the Pimpernel, the last laugh is on the rest of us . . --Mick Rock

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Roger Keith Barrett , commonly known as Syd , was born on January 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England, UK. One of the founding members' of the rock band, Pink Floyd ; Syd unarguably could be called the creative force behind the band during the early years of 1964-1968 . He wrote most of the songs of their successful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). Before even joining Pink Floyd in 1964, Syd was an accomplished artist. He immensely enjoyed painting and also writing. After his departure from Pink Floyd, Syd went on to record two solo albums- The Madcap Laughs and Barrett . Additional material from and not included on the two solo albums was collected and released thus providing a rare treat for Syd's fans everywhere. That album was released in 1988, simply called Opel . Though Syd may have left Pink Floyd behind him forever, his influence can still be found in latter-day Pink Floyd songs such as "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon". The album "Wish You Were Here" is even a tribute to him from the entire band. Finally, Syd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pink Floyd in 1996. Syd quietly passed away on July 7, 2006 in his hometown of Cambridge at the age of 60. Syd continues, to this day, to be an inspiration for all. He will always be remembered by Pink Floyd fans. He is forever our lost hero...
