Octomopotomous combines the beauties of metrical arrangement and the rules needed to produce music; however, they have a twist in their musical technique that is not everyday and familiar to our ears. It is not considered to be “normal†when fitting it to a society that is dominated by the traditional “pop†music genre. Though they go against these highly domesticated norms, they are still able to succeed as they are able to produce pleasureful sensations that leave their listeners in complete beguilement. In the wise words of William Wordsworth, this rising contemporary/modernistic band produces a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.â€
Octopotomous first sank its roots into the music hub of Hollywood, CA in the fall of 2006. It all started when guitarist Stephen Armstrong asked drummer Christopher Schnack to jam after a project that the two were involved in with Douglas Charles Showalter. The two of them got together to jam with a fellow friend of Steve's named Charlie Lin. When that first jam session was over, those three knew they had something with infinite possibilities. Christopher then asked a former bandmate Scott Henson with The Margin Of Error to join since The Margin Of Error was going its separate ways. Jam sessions soon turned into rehearsals and rehearsals turned into shows. It wasn't long before everyone knew that this project had to become a band.
Thus, Octopotomous was born.
After all of them graduated from school in the spring of 2007, decisions needed to be made about whether to keep the band together. So while bassist Scott Henson left for the Bay area to settle a few things, the remaining members wrote new material and anxiously awaited Henson's return. During this waiting period, a new member was added to the quartet. Stephan SeGuin and his amazing piano skills, along with his excellent ear were well received among the band. Making this now a quintet, the band is finally complete.
Each member brings his own creative inspiration and musical knowledge to the energy that is Octopotomous. The band digs deep to make every song a musical exploration in dynamics, styles, and meters.
"Octopotomous is total expression of five collective minds. There is nothing that we put out there for people to listen to that has not been through every possible segue a song could go through. When fans listen to our music, we want it to take them on a journey. We don't have a singer so we try and make the music speak for us" says drummer Christopher Schnack.
Charlie Lin adds that Octopotomous is "freely exploring the infinite possibilities of music without boundaries. Octopotomous is the beginning of a musical evolution!"
