INTERVIEW WITH AJC 4.14.8Late Thursday afternoon Atlanta rapper-actor T.I. granted his first sit-down interview since the convicted felon was arrested for, and pled guilty to, three firearms charges last month.
T.I. has admitted he bought the machine guns and silencers, has 1,000-plus hours of community service to complete, and has been sentenced to an expected 366 days in prison in March 2009. And while the events of Oct. 13, 2007, were off limits, the 27-year-old born Clifford Harris Jr. talked openly about a number of things: from the son he's expecting to the 24 hours before his life changed.
Here are excerpts from the 30-plus minute conversation the AJC had with him at the Villages at Carver YMCA, right after he spoke to a handful of aspiring teen producers at a FOR ME Inc. workshop:
Q. Who is T.I. — or Clifford Harris, Jr., now?
A. It's hard to say because a lot of things are the same and a lot of things have changed. I still have a huge amount of passion for what I do. I still have a huge amount of passion for doing what I can for the community. I still have my foundation — remembering where I came from and principles that have been instilled in me. But at the same time I also have an acknowledgement of things that need to be left behind, let go. And also an acknowledgment that there has to be an about-face. A 180-degree turn, in order for us to continue on the path to success.
Q. Do you feel lucky?
A. I feel blessed. Lucky ain't the word. It's by the grace of God that I'm here.
Q. People don't hear you talking about God on record or in person.
A. When you do the amount of praying that anybody in a situation similar to mine spends the time doing, and for that prayer to work, and for you to have other people praying for you to get through the situation - or to see the situation beginning to look up — and not acknowledge that's what helped the situation, I think that's blasphemous.
Q. You probably did more praying between October and last month than maybe you ever have, huh?
A. Nah, nah, I can't say that. I've always [drifts off] situations tend to arise and prayer tends to give the strength to get through it. I've always recognized that I'm blessed to be here. I've said that in my music — plenty of times. So may different outcomes could have been mine... God shows me favor for some reason or another.

50 CENT CALLS IN HOT 97 4.11.8T.I. SPEAKS ON LEAKED TRACK OFF PAPER TRAIL 4.9.8T.I. HUNT EM DOWN 4.9.8BOBBY V LEAVES DTP & DEF JAM 4.9.8Today in an exclusive interview with DJBooth.net , singer Bobby Valentino explained that he is no longer signed to either Def Jam or Disturbing The Peace (DTP). The news of Valentino’s exit comes just three weeks before the release of his new EP, “Come With Me.â€
“The decision to leave [the label] was totally mine,†said Valentino. “I sat down with Ludacris and Chaka Zulu, and I explained to them that it was time for me to venture out on my own. They had no problem with it; they are cool with it, no beef at all.â€
Valentino released his self-titled debut album under DTP/Def Jam in April 2005, to commercial and popular success, raising high hopes for the (young) crooner. Unfortunately, those expectations were never fully realized as the release of his sophomore LP, “Special Occasion,†was repeatedly pushed back. Valentino was reportedly frustrated with the delays and poor sales of “Special Occasionâ€, culminating in his decision to leave the labels.
“It was a learning experience for me. The people at both Def Jam and Disturbing The Peace have allowed me to step out on faith and do my own thing,†said Valentino.
Valentino went on to state that he has no immediate plans to join another label and is currently plans to work independently. Well i dont know bout you guys but i saw this one coming……
G-UNIT GANGSTA GRILLZ 3.26.8DJ Drama promises that it will be one of the biggest mixtapes of the year. Arguably the top DJ in the mixtape field is teaming up with arguably the most renowned crew in the underground circuit. The first-ever G-Unit Gangsta Grillz is about to go into production.
“A couple of days after G-Unit dropped their Elephant in the Sand mixtape [two weeks ago], I got the call from 50 [Cent] and he was like, ‘Drama, what up? It’s time to do this G-Unit/ Aphilliates Gangsta Grillz.’ He’s really going heavy on the ThisIs50.com Web site, and he was saying basically it’s time to get G-Unit hot in the South. What better way to do that than to do a Gangsta Grillz? Not only from a South aspect but from a quality street-music aspect. Me and Whoo Kid talked the other day, Fif and G-Unit are getting songs together, [my artists] Willie Da Kid and La Da Darkman are getting some songs together. I reached out to the King and told him it’s a special project; I need him to get busy. We’re gonna go in.â€
“The King†Drama is referring to is, of course, none other than the King of the South, T.I. Drama said he’s also reached out to a slew of his other friends from the South and told them to get their best material ready. Fif’s DJ, Whoo Kid, will also be heavily involved in putting the project together.

“I have a highly controversial album coming this summer,†states The Game, “and not the typical controversy you are used to in rap. On LAX I’m addressing real issues that other artists might be scared to talk about on record; issues that need to be heard.â€

Snoop Dogg’s Ego Trippin moves
137,000 in its first week; a historically low sales debut for a studio album from the West Coast veteran. Despite Snoops unusually low first week numbers, Snoop ranks #3 on the charts with his single “Sensual Seduction†still holding steady in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100.
Landing in the #6 spot this week, Fat Joe’s The Elephant in the Room opens with sales of
46,000 copies. Released independently under Terror Squad Entertainment/Imperial records The Elephant in the Room is Joe’s 8th studio album, it includes appearances from J.Holiday, Lil’ Wayne, Plies and KRS-One. That puts him as the number one independant album in the country so its not a loss for Fat Joe, he may just be getting a little more than the other guys….

JADAKISS ROCAFELLA DEBUTE UPDATE: 3.19.8D Block rapper Jadakiss has been busy working on his Rocafella Debut, after signing his deal he did not waste anytime on working the new album he went straight to the studio and started to records new tracks.
“It’s hot! No seriously it is,†Lenny tells HipHopDx. “We’re like 8 songs deep. He’s been working in D-Block studios in Yonkers knocking out joints. He knows what he’s doing so it’s not like a daily hands on over the shoulder kind of thing, †he continued.
“It’s hard. It’s definitely hard and it’s definitely street,†he continues “You won’t hear anything out of the ordinary.
He’s got a record on there called ‘Letter To B.I.G.’ and he’s telling B.I.G. everything that has happened since he’s been gone. Very hot.â€
The LP, rumored to be titled “Kiss My Ass,†will feature collabos from Rick Ross, Kanye West, Jay Z, Sheek Louch, Styles P, Akon, and many others.
No release date has been scheduled as of yet.
NAS & JAY - Z ALBUM COLLABO 2.26.8Rumors continue to swirl about Jay-Z’s still-unconfirmed new record label, Carter Music Group. We hear that Jay is partnering with rapper Nas on an album of duets, “The Kings of Hip Hop,†to be released on the label early next year. Jay’s rep is keeping tight-lipped. JAY - Z "AINT I" NOT ON BLUE PRINT 3?! 2.1.8A spokesperson for Jay-Z told MTV that the Timbaland produced “Ain’t Iâ€, is an older unreleased track, not from any upcoming album. The song hit the internet late last night. The rep also said that no announcement has been made about a new album, Blueprint 3, or any other project as of now.
Well the hyped lasted for less than a day, would have been real crazy if that Blueprint 3 was being worked on…. well when your ready Jay we’re waiting for that Blueprint 3.
THE DYNASTY CONTINUES 1.31.8Contrary to online rumors, Def Jam has not dropped the entire Roc-A-Fella Records roster, Billboard.com has learned. Roc-A-Fella artists include Kanye West, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Tru Life, DJ Clue, Memphis Bleek, Young Gunz and Hector Bambino.
“Beans and Freeway didn’t get dropped,†says Beanie Sigel’s manager, Mark Byers. “I just got off the phone with L.A. Reid talking about the next video for ‘Rain’ featuring Raheem DeVaughn that we’re about to release. We’re re-launching Beanie’s project and releasing a ‘Rain’ remix with State Property.â€
Roc-A-Fella’s cohesiveness and brand strength waned after its leaders Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke parted ways in 2004. Since then, Roc-A-Fella artists haven’t received the same attention as Def Jam stars like Ne-Yo and Rihanna, says an insider.
Jay-Z’s inner camp, including A&R SVP Jay Brown and A&R VP Tyran “Ty Ty†Smith, tendered their resignations this month. However, the rest of Def Jam’s A&R department is intact. Still, things are tenuous for hip-hop at the company.
HARVE PIERRE PRESIDENT OF BAD BOY 1.31.8After pulling triple duty as the Executive Vice President, General Manager, and Vice President of A&R at Bad Boy Records since 2003, Harve Pierre has been appointed as the President of the label, it was recently announced.
In his new capacity, Pierre – who started with the label in 1993 as Sean “Diddy†Combs’ assistant – will continue to report to Diddy, while overseeing the finance, creative, promotional, marketing, A&R, International and Sales divisions at the label.
“Harve’s promotion to President is well deserved,†said Combs. “He has been with Bad Boy since the beginning and has worked hard to learn all aspects of the business.â€
“Harve is one of the chief architects of the Bad Boy culture,†added Warner Music Group Executive VP Kevin Liles. “[He] has done much more than work at Bad Boy Records. He lives the Brand and has helped provide the foundation that will lead Bad Boy into its next decade. His promotion reflects the dedication, consistency, and commitment he has brought to the company. “In addition to his new responsibilities at Bad Boy Records, Pierre is also developing his own Crazy Joint imprint, which will be distributed through Bad Boy/Atlantic Records starting in May 2008.
“He has always been an important part of the A&R process and it is only fitting that Bad Boy would house his imprint, Crazy Joint,†continued Diddy. “I look forward to Harve’s continued success.â€Crazy Joint is currently home to Pop/R&B songstress Marina Chello.
Pierre’s career in the entertainment industry dates back to his days as a student at Howard University, where he met and befriended Diddy and Derrick “D-Dot†Angelettie.In 1992, he started his professional career as an intern at Uptown Records. Since then, Pierre has served as a producer, A&R and video director, working with such artists as Mary J. Blige, SWV, Craig Mack, Outkast, and Yung Joc.

Is the money not enough….smhBUSTA GUILTY 1.23.8Busta Rhymes cut a deal with prosecutors in New York earlier today (January 23) that will keep him out of prison on two assault charges. According to the Associated Press, the rapper agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor assault charges and was sentenced to 10 days community service and three years probation. If he violates the probation, he will face up to one year behind bars. The charges stem from two separate incidents in which a former employee and a New York man said the rapper assaulted them.Busta was also facing a DUI charge for an arrest on May 3, 2007. According to TMZ.com, he was ordered to pay a $750 fine and enroll in a drunk driving program. In relation to another separate count of driving with a suspended license, Busta will lose his driver’s license for a period of six months. In July, Busta rejected a plea deal offered by the district attorney that would have landed him in prison for one year.THE GAME NEW ALBUM 1.22.8Game is about 80 percent done with his next album, LAX, according to his camp. The man his DJ, Nu Jerzey Devil, is calling “A-game†has been working with producers Cool and Dre and Scott Storch, among others, but there’s word now that he and Dr. Dre are hooking up again too.
“[Dr. Dre] dropped some stuff off,†Nu Jerzey Devil said. “But I’m not sure if Game did anything to them yet.†Game has been working in Miami and Los Angeles and should be ready to drop sometime this spring. The Compton, California, native has also reunited with his estranged brother, Big Fase, but that hasn’t stopped Game from continuing to tell his guys that LAX will spell el fin for him.
“He’s fed up with all the BS,†Devil said of Game’s plans to retire. “Unless something tremendous happens with this album, he’ll probably fall back and play the executive role. But this album is sounding better than his first two. He’s at his peak. I’mma do everything in my power to keep him going. I think everything will be good.â€
Game’s next mixtape is tentatively titled Am I My Brother’s Keeper and should hit the streets a little before his album.
THE # GAME UPDATE: 1.18.8For the fourth week in a row, Lupe Fiasco holds the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s ‘Top Rap Albums Chart’.

Kanye West rises two spots up to No. 2 all thanks to Graduation shifting 17,900 units this week. After 19 weeks on the chart, the album has sold 1,932,500 copies.
Jay-Z refuses to budge from the No. 3 spot. American Gangster scans 17,300 discs this week, bringing the album’s total sales to 928,300 copies.
Birdman takes a step up to No. 4. 5 Star Stunna reels in 14,700 units in its fifth week. To date, the album has sold 208,100 copies.
Soulja Boy slips three spots to No. 5. Fourteen thousand ‘crankers’ picked up Souljaboytellem.com this week, bringing the album’s total sales to 696,900.
Chilling at No. 6 is Bow Wow & Omarion. Face Off shells out 11,500 discs this week. In total, the album has sold 260,600 copies.
Right behind the heartthrob duo is 50 Cent at No. 7. Curtis moves 8,700 discs this week. So far, the album has sold a total of 1,245,800 copies.
Scarface and the Wu-Tang Clan trade spots with the Houston legend taking the No. 8 seat and the Shaolin crew holding fort at No. 9.
Face’s M.A.D.E rings out 8,000 copies this week while Wu Tang’s 8 Diagrams cashed out 7,600 copies. M.A.D.E has sold a total of 139,400 units so far while 8 Diagrams has sold 139,800.
Staying put at the No. 10 spot he held last week and wrapping up the ‘Top Rap Albums Chart’ is DJ Drama. Gangsta Grillz scans 7,100 this week, bringing the album’s total to 114,700.
CASH MONEY LAWSUIT COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT 1.9.8More legal troubles are on the horizon for rapper Brian “Baby†Williams and his label Cash Money Records.
Williams, who was recently arrested after police found a pound of marijuana in his tour bus, is being sued by various music publishing companies for breach of contract and copyright infringement for sampling other artists songs without permission and failing to fully pay for royalties.
LUPE DROPPING THE GAME!? 1.8.8After Jay-Z declared him “a breath of fresh air†and his debut album received three Grammy nods, Lupe Fiasco went back into the studio to create his sophomore offering, The Cool. In this SOHH exclusive, we talk to Lupe about his group project with Kanye and Pharrell, why he’s ready for retirement and the reception of new his album.
Having just dropped his sophomore album this week, Lupe Fiasco is characteristically cool. He’s not concerned with album sales and he’s not making any bets. “No, no predictions,†he tells SOHH. “I feel good though, I feel really good about it. The response from the peoples has been amazing. The reviews have been very, very good. It’s a very well received album so that mission is complete. Now it’s time to see if it sells what everybody is hoping it will sell. I don’t really got no hopes.â€
Though he has no personal goals for first week sales, Lupe does agree that his album may be one of the best of 2007. “Yeah, I wouldn’t say best, but good. Definitely in the running even outside of hip-hop.â€
On The Cool Lupe touches on various taboo subjects. On “Intruder Alert†he addresses the subject of rape, and on the highly criticized “Gotta Eat†he rhymes from the perspective of a cheeseburger.
“It’s called imagination,†he says in defense of the songs premise. “You should use it. The song is really about health. The hook is ‘My man says feed me feed me when @#*$%s gotta eat that’s when sh-t gets greasy.’ You look at the health situation in the hoods and it’s just bad. There’s no Whole Foods. There’s no nutrition. Nobody is vegetarians. It’s cheeseburgers and steak sandwiches. We’re slowing killing ourselves of heart disease and all that. If the bullets don’t get you the diabetes will. It was basically just making that statement so that people can start having the conversation.â€
Lupe is already looking towards the release of his third and final LP. “One more… LupEnd is what it’s actually called,†he told SOHH. Im’a always perform until the day I die. It’s just the industry of recorded music doesn’t appeal to me. That dream of getting a record deal and all that is lost. I woke up from it. But in between time, in the meantime, you’ll probably get a CRS album. But yeah, one more full length solo debut LP.â€
CRS, which stands for Child Rebel Soldiers, refers to the group that Lupe formed with fellow rappers/producers Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.
“We had the one record,†he jokes. “The US Placers record with Tom Yorke and actually my girl Vashtie just did a dope video for that. It’s pretty fresh. [Watch Here]. We’re about, like, no songs deep. One song deep, a lot of ideas, a lot of conversations about how we want to roll out and what we want it to look like, what we want it to feel like. So we’re in discussion right now but hopefully end of 08, we’ll have something proper.â€
With so much talk of retirement in rap these days it’s easy to question whether or not LupEnd will actually be the end for Fiasco. He assures us that it will. “Nah, if I go I’ma go. I just want to make sure I leave behind a legacy.â€
JAY - Z & APPLE LABEL MERGER OFFICIAL 1.3.8This is one we’ve heard before. Jay-Z leaves Def Jam, starts revolutionary digital record label with Apple. The first part has already happened and now Boy Genius Report is saying that the label is definitely a go.
I can tell you that Jay flat out denied this when somebody asked him about it back in October. The folks over at Crunchgear are already calling bullshit on BGR’s rumor, but they also offer some more realistic possibilties.
I can’t tell you if this is actually going to happen or not, but I do know that the music industry needs some kind of earth shattering wake up call. This may or may not turn out to be it. Something needs to be done sooner rather than later.
“It’s not the music; people ingest music the same way. It’s just that the model of selling CDs has changed. So doing things the typical way is not in the best interests of anyone and not exciting for me.†- Jay to Billboard last month.
NEW UPDATES ON THE GAME 1.3.8The Game made a cameo appearance at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip New Year’s Eve to help out his homie Nas with a few songs. He also revealed some details of his new album that will follow-up his 2007 banger, Doctor’s Advocate.
The new album drops in June and will be named LAX. Will you be checking for this summer?
PRODIGY NEW YEARS VIDEO 1.3.8What a horrible way to start off the year! Prodigy from Mobb Deep and his girlfriend give us a peep of their nastiness as they roll the camera on New Years Eve. It looks like he’s taking hygiene lessons from Jim Jones. We hope the bathtub was the next stop on your journey. Disgusting.
50 CENT INTERVIEW 1.2.8JAY - Z LEAVING DEF - JAM IN 08. 12.25.7After months of speculation, Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z announced on December 24 that he
will officially vacate his position as President of Def Jam Records at the end of his term.
The 38-year-old rapper issued a statement today (December 24) stating he will step down as president in 2008.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have served as President of such a culturally-defining label as Def Jam over the last three years,†Jay-Z said in a statement. “During that time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s most dynamic artists and many of the most dedicated and talented executives in the music business today, including Antonio “L.A.†Reid. But now it’s time for me to take on new challenges.â€
Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, took over as President of Def Jam in 2005.
Under his guidance, the rapper signed his former rival Nas to Def Jam and oversaw the release of hit records by Kanye West, Rihanna and Ne-Yo.
The announcement serves to cap off a very turbulent year that saw Def Jam artist like LL Cool J protested that Jay as an artist and executive presented a unique conflict of interest. Additionally, number of traditionally successful Hip-Hop acts like The Roots, Redman and Method Man failed to get traction under his reign.
Island Def Jam Music Group Chairman Antonio “L.A.†Reid said that Jay-Z felt it was time to take on “different challenges in his life.â€
“While we regret his decision to move on, we certainly respect it,†Reid
said in a statement. “Since Jay joined us as President of Def Jam in 2005, we have all benefited from his leadership, sense of spirit and invaluable friendship. While he will continue to be one of our signature artists, he will nonetheless be missed in this executive capacity. The entire Island Def Jam family joins me in wishing him the very best in all of his future business endeavors.â€
Jay-Z will continue running and recording for his Roc-A-Fella imprint, which is distributed by the Island Def Jam Music Group. The mogul is rumored to be making a transition to the urban division of Sony Records with Rick Rubin.
“I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy, helping to move the company into a new era of artistic success,â€
