All I ever really seem to accomplish in life, is to question what it is I should accomplish.
BIO:Brandon Roth’s art, more than anything, is a reaction against isolation and detachment; an attempt to connect. He recalls, as one of his first memories, sitting in his Aunt’s screen printing shop, trying to sell drawings for nickels to the shop’s customers. The religious propoganda in his home-schooling would, ironically, do little to prepare him for the loss of his father which at the age of 13, the apex of adolescence, brought with it the mental torment that would drive him to first start writing graffiti, to spending long nights on methamphetamines with various drug-addled delinquents, to Parliament Lights and plastic handles of McCormick’s vodka, screaming from the rooftops of quiet suburban homes. It is only now, in looking back, that Roth realizes that the center that held was art. Without art, he says, he’d have been lost. Roth’s characters are reflections of the comic books he devoured as a child, lifted above their comic form; they stand as reflections of Roth himself, instead of the typical battle of good and evil that usually plays out in comic books, Roth’s characters are more philosophical, they stand as the reflection of the artist attempting to understand the difference between good and evil, and his place in the spectrum. His photographs are of things whose beauty is atypical and often overlooked- the beauty in back alleys, in the heavy sound of an empty construction site. Roth’s vantage point is that of the incorrigible misfit; his position, that of the outsider who sees keenly those things which are important; but in shyness, lacks the ability to convey the message (because who would listen). Thus, he resorts to the scribblings and photographs plastered throughout his works. -Brian Knab
