Save Our Southbank

About Me

WE NEED YOUR HELP QUEENSLAND!
South Bank Corporation is trying to sell the Boardwalk and surrounding Parkland at South Bank to a developer so office blocks and a shopping mall can be built in their place. Already drafted plans show that trees will be cut down, grassy areas will be bulldozed and kids playgrounds will be scrapped - all so private offices, some exclusive retail stores, and expensive restaurants can pay rent into the pocket of South Bank Corporation.
To sell the land, South Bank Corporation needs to have legislation amended and the rules that govern what it can do with the parkland changed. Those rules, under the South Bank Corporation Act 1989, were put in place after Expo 88. Their purpose is to protect the land for the public and to ensure that we always have green, open spaces and a link to the Brisbane river that is OURS to enjoy. Very soon that land will become THEIRS.
What this means is that South Bank Corporation, is going to take YOUR parkland from you and sell it to a developer for profit. The Queensland Government can stop this. In fact, the Queensland Government already helps South Bank Corporation out in many ways - for example it has been providing the Corporation with annual grants of approximately $10 million each year since 2000. Even with such a huge financial contribution, paid for by the public through OUR tax, South Bank Corporation still wants more money and OUR community parkland space is in their sights!
HELP US SEND PREMIER ANNA BLIGH THIS MESSAGE:
NO TO SOUTH BANK CORPORATION SELLING PUBLIC LAND; AND
NO TO SOUTH BANK CORPORATION PUTTING BIG BUSINESS PROFITS BEFORE PARKLAND!
See our blogs above for how you can help pitch in to prevent this from happening.
Here are some comments we have received on our website from concerned Brisbane residents:
" Just another way for South Bank Corporation to get their own way. They couldn't get it through the above board way....so now they sell."
"[South Bank Corporation,] a sad collection of men and women running an organisation that has no integrity."
"This is an absolute disgrace - the public has paid for this space, both initially to help develop it for Expo 88 and on an ongoing basis, year after year - why should we spend our money on something which can then be taken away from us"
"If they can't think about the Brisbane families who regularly come to enjoy "their" space and facilities, (and who are the biggest money spenders on a regular basis overall), at least give some thought to the tourists who arrive in the busloads to appreciate said facilities - we are promoting our city as clean and green - what on earth is green about dozens of new buildings and tearing out the trees? "
" This would be equivalent to cutting up and developing parts of Centennial Or Hyde Park in Sydney. Let's keep our parkland for the enjoyment of posterity as originally intended, and our children and grandchildren will thank us."
" the Board of Southbank Corporation will go down in history as destroyers of our green space at Southbank."
"What is planned is an absolute digrace---that public Parkland is being sold off for the building of a concrete monstrosity . Who gives them the right to sell our Parkland to developers."
