THE WAR ON THE WAR ON THE LONELY
A haunting pop operetta accompanied by character portraits and panoramic landscapes
Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006
The music, written by Young, evokes the whimsical pop sounds of Elton John and the melancholy folk of Nick Drake and was inspired by a fascination with the traveling-carnival caste system. Yamazaki's astounding piano accompaniment to Young's acoustic guitar and fragile falsetto is spontaneous and moving.
Young coined the term pop operetta in an effort to convey the melodrama of a short opera drawing on popular soap opera culture. The title, The War on the War on the Lonely, alludes to the sensationalist tactics of the news media which tirelessly attempt to make viewers afraid of everything, particularly of being alone.
Laura Niemi, a visual artist from Portland, Oregon will also be exhibiting her works based on the characters and storyline of this sad tale. Her woeful, carnivalesque paintings on wood portray the business of bright lights and fast rides while revealing the dim, dysfunctional lives of its proprietors, the Dickles.
