About Me

BIOGRAPHY - Kate Newell, OboeAn active musician with an involvement in high quality cross-genre and cross arts performance, improvisation and composition, Kate Newell studied at the University of Western Australia, where she gained a first in BMus performance in 2004, and was the recipient of the Edith Cowan Prize for Most Outstanding Music Graduate 2003. An experienced soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, she appeared regularly in engagements with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Perth International Arts Festival, Australian Opera Studio and Youth Music Australia, as well as recording a solo recital in 2002 for the ABC Classic FM “Young Performers Series”.In 2002, Kate was awarded the Flame Opal Fellowship, enabling her to relocate to Cambridge to continue her musical studies with Nicholas Daniel. Since July 2004, she has combined numerous solo recitals with appearances in ensembles in Cambridgeshire, Essex and London, as well as touring with the West Australian Youth Orchestra to London, Brussels and Paris in 2005, where she gave the European premiere of the Carl Vine Oboe Concerto.Kate also appears regularly on the pub and festival circuit around the UK with experimental outfit Rude Mechanicals, with current releases on Sexton Ming's label RIM and Ex Gratia Recordings. Kate has recently collaborated with Jowe Head, John Callaghan and Rekindle, and visual artists Verena Hanschke, Echao Jiang, Elisabeth Manus and Kris Hofmann (koja-k.co.uk)As well as musical performance, Kate also has a strong interest in arts development and engagement with the arts. Formerly the Education Administrator for Britten Sinfonia, she now resides in London, where she works part time as Programme Officer for Orchestras Live, the national development agency for orchestral music.
