Brooklyn based singer, songwriter and guitarist Ward White returns with his first album in two years, Pulling Out . On this, his fifth self-produced effort, Ward continues to explore his fascination with bad decisions and the people who make them.
"It’s a record about unfinished business - the conflict it causes, the messes it makes."
â€And yes, it is about sex - but only in the sense that everything is about sex, or at least informed by it.â€
Among its highlights, Pulling Out features songs about half-finished tattoos, makes mention of Jackson Pollock and Lindsey Buckingham (though, regrettably, not in the same song) and boasts at least one spoken-word interlude. Because, you know, some people like to talk.
Comprising the band is a stellar assemblage of New York City musicians, including Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller) on Bass, Mark Stepro (Ben Kweller) on Drums, Loser's Lounge impresario Joe McGinty (Nada Surf, Psychedelic Furs) keyboards, and String arrangements courtesy of Claudia Chopek (Mike Viola, Hem). Ward White sang, played the guitars and contributed face-melting Marxophone and Omnichord.
Tracking and mixing were artfully helmed by Ken Rich (Joseph Arthur, Julia Darling) at his Brooklyn studio, Grand Street Recording.
