Other photos show V-tec and Mr. Hill with their associates "chillin'" at the "O.W.T.T. house," sneering into the camera and flashing hand signs, decked out in doo rags and bandanas worn bandit-style. A link from their Millionairz N' Playaz site to Mr. Hill's separate MySpace page offers photos of pistols and assault rifles. But Mr. Bennings and Mr. Hill are rappers - entrepreneurs, they say - trying to make it in the entertainment industry. The two are cousins who grew up in Barton Village, then moved out in the mid-1990s. OWTT, an acronym for Only With True Thugs, is the name of their record business, they said. By "true thugs," they mean true friends, true family members. They are well aware that the acronym has become something different from its original intent. And that frustrates them."It's kids that don't know what they're doing, that got nothing going for them," Mr. Bennings, 29, said at their cramped studio inside a trailer in rural Edgefield County, where they were laying tracks for an upcoming CD. "These kids are 15 and 16 years old, running around holding guns up."The transformation of the name began in 1999, when Mr. Bennings linked OWTT with his old neighborhood by repeatedly saying the acronym on a rap song called Barton Village Souljaz. Though he pronounced it "out," OWTT turned into O-Dub, the first two syllables of the acronym.Ironically, Barton Village Souljaz was supposed to be about responsible young men and women stepping up to reclaim their community, which had become fraught with drugs, crime and decay, Mr. Bennings said. Millionairz N' Playaz once took part in former Mayor Bob Young's School's Out Party to help steer kids away from trouble.OWTT, they said, was conceived to give people an alternative to street crime by getting them involved in the record label.BUT IT DIDN'T work out that way. Teens got involved but dropped out, and some turned to drug dealing. One group member, John "Wolf" Lambright, who rapped on Barton Village Souljaz, was kidnapped and shot dead in an argument over stolen computer equipment in early 1999.Millionairz N' Playaz has since merged with South Carolina rappers Cashous Clay (Brian Thomas) and RCP (Richard Patrick) to form Bridge Boyz. Early this year they recorded a James Brown tribute, In Our Hometown (Aug. Ga), which describes the late icon's "homegoing" ceremony at James Brown Arena. In February, the Bridge Boyz were back in their studio recording Make It Rain On You, sampling Brook Benton's Rainy Night In Georgia."Making it rain" is slang for throwing up a wad of bills for a stripper, and they're hoping to market the song in Atlanta strip clubs. While they worked, they drank Bud Light. Bob Marley looked on from a poster on the wall, holding a fat, smoldering joint. All four members of the group said the so-called gang violence in Augusta is being sparked by neighborhood rivalries. If someone from one neighborhood attacks someone from your neighborhood at a club, at school or anywhere, you'd better be ready to strike back, they said."If your boy gets to fighting, and you don't help him, they're going to get on your (butt) when you get back to the 'hood,'" said Mr. Hill, 26. "It's just a bunch of young kids running around together from their 'hood."Mr. Patrick, 24, added that these youths are only doing the "stuff that they see on TV.""It's like monkey-see, monkey-do," he said.
