CORN BEEP AND AHHHHH!
mixtape review in Elemental issue 75
sometimes, battle djs miss the mark with mixtapes. either their selection is questionable or the intricate tricks they incorporate are simply too complex for the casual fan to aprreciate. not the case with the three-time dmc canada regional champ wundrkut. this native of british columbia delivers an entertaining and skill filled cd with corn beep and ahhh!! as you would expect, CB & A is heavy on the cuts, but not so much that it disinterests the listener. its laid out much in the vein of a dj revolution mixtape: scratch interludes and beat juggles surrounded by plenty of good music presented through super clean transitions. wundrkut plucks from various eras with bass heavy beats being the common thread. hes got the mid 90's gems like "chief rocka" and "soul clap" and smooth blends of recent hits of nas' "made you look" and "got it twisted" by mobb deep, the latter featuring havoc running wild over original flavour's "can i get open?" old school selections from the likes of epmd, main source and a nasty remix of "i know you got soul" along with a few funk beats make this a complete offering without sounding pretentious or too ambitious. what seperates turntablists from more conventional hip hop djs is their attention to detail. wundrkut is no different. with precise cuts and a commendable selection, corn beep and ahhh!! is on point. tell a friend.
