About Me

Hmm.. Bout me? Here's some tidbits in no particular order.1) I'm a total closet geek. Sorry, but I've hidden my darkside long enough. D&D, Munchkin, Video games, RPG's, Magic, Settlers, Cheapass games. If it's nerdy, I've probably done it. Except for LARP. No larping. On the bright side, I haven't played D&D or Magic since high school, so maybe I'm reforming. Oh yeah. I used to visit the SCA occasionally. I'm a normal person. I swear to god.2) I play guitar, acoustic and electric. I picked it up because my mother used to play to me when I was little. I still have a soft spot for folk music and women singers. I played in a blues band for a little while when I lived in Michigan, but I mostly sang as my guitar skills could use a little work. I also write songs.3) I love being outdoors. Backpacking, hiking, walking, going for a bike ride. I like fishing with my uncles and eating the catch when we're done. I like to play in the snow and sit on a rock listening to the waves come in. Some call me Hippy... I've killed men for less.4) I love horses. I used to ride competively, but it gets lame quick. Dressage if you're wondering. See also: man wearing tight pants. (See also: stolen from the book Choke, which I highly recommend). I spent quite a bit of time rehabing abused horses (mine included, though I wasn't the one who abused him). I still have my horse, who is turning 11 soon. He's currently living on my parents farm and teaching them quite a bit.5) I hate smokers. Yes, that means I hate some of my closest friends, but only when they are smoking and it is somehow getting in my lungs, otherwise, I don't care. Cigarette smoke makes me feel shitty everytime I'm near it. I'm not big on the bar scene either. I'll go out, but I'd rather be someplace else.6) Did I mention that I like video games?6) I like to dance. Swing and lindy mostly, but if it's got a good beat I'll give it a shot. This does not include clubbing.7) Football, basketball and baseball can bite me. Except Cubs games. I'll see a game at Wrigley any day of the week.8) I'm a doctoral student in clinical psychogy. No, not the Freudian kind. No, I don't want to analyze you or read your mind. For those of you that care, I'm a behaviorist. For those of you that don't, it means see line 1: I'm a total geek. I'm considering pursuing a career in academia. That way I can teach, see clients, and do research. Current research project? Problem video gamers. Wonder from where my inspiration came.9) For those of you that noticed that there were two of #6, you win a prize. It's not a really good prize, because this only came about as a direct result of my laziness in editing. Actually, there's no prize. Sorry again. I'll stop now."The task of a scientific analysis is to explain how the behavior of a person as a physical system is related to the conditions under which the human species evolved and the conditions under which the individual lives.... We can follow the path taken by physics and biology by turning directly to the relation between behavior and the environment and neglecting supposed mediating states of mind. Physics did not advance by looking more closely at the jubilance of a falling body, or biology by looking at the nature of vital spirits, and we do not need to try to discover what personalities, states of mind, feelings, traits of character, plans, purposes, intentions or other perquisites of autonomous man really are in order to get on with a scientific analysis of behavior." - Skinner

My Interests

Singing, guitar, video games, hiking, swing dancing, blues music, other good music, politics (democrat or something greener), cooking, backpacking, outdoors, volleyball, psychology, philosophy, poetry, horses, people watching, writing, good books, good fantasy books, good movies, cheesy movies, pushing my own limits. Oh yeah, and I really want to learn how to play soccer.

I'd like to meet:

Anybody who shares the same interests as me. I have a fairly diverse collection of hobbies, so I expect that I'll have something in common with a large range of people. And it never hurts to have new friends.

Music:

Ggrr.. So tough. No particular order. Live, Counting Crows (they suck in concert), Allman Brothers, BB King, Johnny Cash, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Tracy Chapman, Louis Prima (great cooking music), White Stripes, Elvis, Radio Head, most 80's music like the Cars or Pat Benetar, Folk music that my mom used to sing to me, Blues Traveller, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Rolling Stones, Radiohead, Liquid Soul, Beatles, Ray Charles, Huey Lewis, Juliana Hatfield, Beastie Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Wilco, Jethro Tull, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, classic rock, dirty detroit rock, blue grass, blues, big band, swing, and many others.

Movies:

Blazing Saddles... Well, that's my favorite comedy anyway. Star Wars, Space Balls, Serenity, Shaun of the Dead... I can't think of many movies, but I know there are more.

Television:

I get three channels and they are fuzzy. If I'm at a friends house, I enjoy Aqua Teen, Simpsons, and Chapelle Show. Let's not forget MASH, which was the best father/son bonding tool ever invented. Firefly never should have been cancelled. My friend Sean let me borrow the DVD's and I'm hooked. The movie was great too (Serenity). I'm a closet fan of a certain girly show that I will not publicly name, and I've been watching The Wire and Heroes.

Books:

Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite. I visited the Chateau D'If when I was in Europe. Kinda small, but cool. Anita Blake series (detective/fantasy/goth/SEXY... total chick books, but they are good). The Lord of the Rings series, The Hobbit, The Simarillion, Rhapsody series (fantasy), Harry Potter, Brave New World, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Dante's Inferno (the whole divine comedy never interested me as much as the hell part), Fahrenheit 451, Choke, The Mists of Avalon, Mary Queen of Scots, Kite Runner, random books on various religions. Currently reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Peoples History of the United States by Howard Zinn, and a bunch of random books on different types of therapy. Oh. And I hated Catcher in the Rye.

Heroes:

Wolverine. Well, he's a super hero anyway. My mother. My father. My grandparents. Vincent Van Gogh. Edgar Allen Poe. Dr. Richard Spates (old psych professor who got me excited about doing research). Jean-Jacques Rousseau for writing the Social Contract. Ed Kowalcyzk (before he turned into a wuss). Bill Clinton (sans the infidelity). B.F. Skinner.
