About Me

Kurt Darren is undoubtedly the most popular artist of Afrikaans pop music in South Africa! Although Kurt had recorded a few great English CDs during the 90s, he made his memorable breakthrough in the Afrikaans music industry in 2002, with the release of his album "Meisie Meisie". The characteristic song on this album, "Meisie Meisie", is still in huge demand at each Kurt Darren show and remains a definate favourite. This album was not the beginning of this extraordinary singers' music career, his first album with the title "For Your Precious Love" was released in 1995. "Meisie Meisie" was only the start of many quality recordings to follow. Kurt captured the hearts of many South Africans with his charismatic stage presence, energy and excellent vocal talent.
Kurt has thirteen solo albums to date, and through the unbelievable support of his fans, his own hard work and popularity in the music industry, this list is destined to grow for many years to come. His new English CD will be released in May 2009.
Kurt is a living example that dedication, perseverance and a passion for what you do, will result in success. With each CD after "Meisie Meisie" never failing to adhere to his unwavering standard, Kurt continues to impress his audiences each time.
An amazing amount of Kurts' biggest hits have been translated into other languages in countries such as: Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, some of these songs include: "Meisie Meisie", "Hemel Op Tafelberg", "Staan Op", "Alleen", "As Jy My Wil He", "Se Net Ja" and many more. Kurt also shares a couple of his songs with these countries, and vice versa. These Cultures compliment each other and the end result is astonishing. "Meisie Meisie" has for instance been recorded by a German group called Klostertaler and in Germany this song is known as Hallo Susse, recorded by Universal.
The sales for "Meisie Meisie" meant an impressive Double Platinum Award for Kurt, and the popularity of the song is still growing.
With "Se Net Ja" in 2003, Kurt ensured a series of contemporary hits which include: "Se Net Ja" and the ever popular "Loslappie". The album also features the moving ballad "Hemel Op Tafelberg" which is yet another example of Kurts' magnificent talent as a songwriter. (This song was co-written in conjuction with two unbelievably talented people, Don Kelly and Marc Brendon.) The sales for "Se Net Ja" are well past an astounding Triple Platinum Status. Loslappie is a major contribution to Kurts' popularity, and with up to 250 shows per year, Kurt has undeniably become one of South Africa's most popular artists.
His album "Staan Op" in 2004 rapidly reached Double Platinum status after its release. Songs on this album range from pulsing rythmic hits to passionate ballads. Some of the songs include: "Staan Op", "Ek Laaik Haar", "Wil Jy" and many more. This albums' popularity is growing by the day, just as much as the other albums. "Staan Op" won the GMT Award for "Best Pop album of the year."

Kurt Darren was born in Pretoria and matriculated from the Lyttleton Manor High School. He inherited his amazing singing talent from his mother Cecilia May. At school he participated in various musical plays, and says that he has been interested in music for as long as he can remember.

What few people don't know about Kurt is that he is fluent in both Afrikaans and English, this is because of his bilingual upbringing (his father is Afrikaans and his mother is English). His capability to write songs and sing in both languages and to entertain his bilingual audiences is astonishing.

Kurt went to the Army after he matriculated and did his basic training in Walvisbay. During his time in the army, he joined the army's entertainment group and toured with them for a year, he then started to realise that he wanted to pursue his life long dream of becoming a singer. He was discouraged by many people saying that he cannot make a living out of singing.

Kurt then tried a couple of other occupations, which included acting as a tourguide in the Kruger National Park (Nature lies very close to Kurts' heart). With some of Kurts' family members in the building industry, he then also tried his hand at that, but not for long. He finally decided that he was going to sing on a full time basis.

Kurt sang ballads for thirteen years, motionless on a chair, with a microphone in his hand, at many corporate functions, bars and small venues across South Africa. He drove from one city to the next, loading and unloading his speakers by himself, he also had to set up and do his own sound. Kurt is proud to say that he has been part of a couple of "groups" during his singing career, some of these include: "Deep Blue" and "Keep Your Day Job".

He always knew that his big breakthrough would come someday. He then performed on a luxury cruiseliner for three months, lost a couple of kilograms and cut his hair. (For those who don't know, Kurt wore his hair at shoulder length for quite some time.) He was now ready and full of energy for the recording of "Meisie Meisie" in 2002, and the fame that soon followed.

Nowadays Kurt tours right across South Africa, and even abroad, on a growing basis.

His first album "For Your Precious Love" was released in 1995. Kurt then had the great fortune to release all the following Albums, which are listed in chronological order:

• 1997 - "Kurt Darren". • 1998 - "Just When I Needed You Most" • 1999 - "Since I Found You" • 2001 - "Net Jy Alleen" • 2002 - "Meisie Meisie". * Kurts' breakthrough into the Afrikaans music industry came with "Meisie Meisie". The "Meisie Meisie" album includes various hit songs and still has people filling dancefloors. "Meisie Meisie" was one of the Top3 hits of 2002 and has achieved Double Platinum status. It was during the planning and recording of this album that Kurt started writing lyrics with two inspiring and very talented people: Don Kelly and Marc Brendon. This trio have been complimenting each others' songwriting skills ever since. •2003 - "Se Net Ja" •2004 - "Staan Op" •2005 - "Vat My, Maak My Joune" •2006 - "Lekker Lekker"

Kurts' Latest Album "Lekker Lekker" (2006), guarantees to pull on your heartstrings with Ballads like "Kom Laat Ons Dans" and "Standing On The Edge", and to get your feet stomping with hits such as "Ek Sit En Verlang", "Lekker Lekker", "Omgeswaai", "Ek Soek Jou Hier" and many many more. This album promises to become one of Kurts best albums to date, as the music introduces his fans to another side of Kurts musical talent. Once again, Kurt did not fail to impress with this astounding album!!

His dream has been realised as a singer. With almost a dozen solo albums, his voice also compliments many compiled CD's.

For five consecutive albums, Kurt has been experiencing the wave of success. He lives to entertain with his musical talent, and plans to stay in this industry for a long time to come. He has an everlasting passion for music and wants to share his Godgiven gift with each and every person.
