At the age of 30, Fernando Sodré is recognized as one of the most important representatives of the new generation of violists who seek, in this traditional instrument, new paths and sound experiments that surprise their listeners. In partnership with Hootz Lutheria, Sodré innovated with the creation of a 14-string viola, a unique instrument, with a greater harmonic extension and a rather surprising tone.
The formula for the success of this work is the mixture of the peculiar sonority of the viola caipira (Brazilian ten-string viola) with the skillful way that the artist plays the instrument, achieving an effect which is out of the ordinary.
Fernando Sodré is becoming renowned nationally, not only because of the originality of his work, but also because of his consummate skill in playing the viola.
Influenced by great Brazilian artists like Tom Jobim, Raphael Rabelo and Milton Nascimento, and by international artists like Pat Metheny and Paco Del Lucia, on his latest release, Fernando demonstrates the quality and rarity of his instrumental innovations for this instrument.
In 2006, he launched his first independent CD with his own compositions, and other that were co-written or re-recordings. For his second work, which was the result of the 2006 Petrobrás selection, Sodré has displayed all his passion for Brazilian instrumental music.
Diving ever deeper into instrumental composition, Fernando Sodré shows the depth of his passion for music and for the viola. The Show Rio de Contrastes (River of Contrasts) brings to the stage the result of all the musical information and of the life of a musician who seeks to refine his playing of the instrument and the valuation of his composition. His work is innovative, both in terms of the performance of pieces that had not been explored for this instrument, as well as by the formation suggested in this work, uniting the viola caipira with genres like choro, samba and jazz. It is a reflection of the continuity of the work of an independent artist who crosses musical barriers with his talent on the viola caipira. The Rio de Contrastes show is proof that he is in tune with Brazilian music represented by musicians who are totally integrated with the instrumental universe. On stage are the top musicians of Brazilian music today, like: Márcio Bahia – Drums, Gabriel Grossi – Harmonica, Thiago do EspÃrito Santo – Fretless Bass, Daniel Santiago – Guitar and Fernando Sodré – Viola caipira.
The CD “Rio de Contrastesâ€, produced through the Federal Cultural Incentive Law, with support from Petrobrás, was directed by the violinist and composer Daniel Santiago, with four re-recordings of the first record in instrumental versions, and two new partnerships with composer Rafa Duarte. And this river doesn’t stop there: it navigates with the strength of the interaction between Minas and the South in the music written by Daniel Santiago and Yamandú Costa, one of the most important names in Brazilian instrumental music. Sodré plays the viola boldy, and his musical arrangements show off what the instrument can do.
The record has a team of recognized instrumental musicians like Márcio Bahia - drums; Gabriel Grossi - harmonica; Thiago do EspÃrito Santo – contrabass; Daniel Santiago – guitar, as well as the illustrious participation of mandolin player Hamilton de Holanda.
