About Me

Lourindo Cuna, AKA Lindo, is a Mozambican musician born in 1977 in Maputo. He became professional in 1997. Before that Since 1995 he worked both within music and theater, and in 1997 he decided to be dedicate only to Musica. His work is based in Mozambican traditional music, dance and instruments. In 1996 he joined the group of song and dance of CASA DE CULTURA in Maputo with which he travelled to Zimbabwe and South Africa performing at AMAKOSI Festival, LINKFEST Festivalls (Zimbabwe) and IESTERDFOOD Festival in South Africa (all of them in 1997). In 1998, he created with his friend Simão Nhacule the SILITA band, which participated and won the FRANCOPHONIE music program in 2000 (Paris, France). As part of the prize the band was given the opportunity to record their first album "Ziva Tako".During that same year (2000) Lindo joined the National Song and Dance Company of Mozambique where he is still working now. As a Musician he has worked with several musicians and singers both in Mozambique and abroad. For example he shared the stage with artists like Ismaello-Lo, Richard Bona, Lukua Kanza, Joyous Celebration, Judith Sephuma, Bongo Maffin band, Mafiki Zolo band, Bonga, Grace Evora and many others. As a musician of the Company he has travelled with the CNCD all around the world.Lindo is a well known artist in and outside Mozambique as a good musician and a good teacher. For this reason he was invited in Octuber 2004 to teach in USA. After participated in Dance Africa Festival 2004 in Chicago, he went to Iowa to teach eastern drumming for one semester at University of Northen Iowa, UNI, at Music department. During that semester he also conducted workshops in different places of Iowa, like the Iowa State University, Iowa city university, Howkky University and YWCA in Iowa, and at University of Kansas city at the Capoeira event in Kansas. After that semester he moved to New York where it had booked performances and teachings at Alvin Aley school, and many places in NY. He was invited to be a guest musician at Hunter College in New York to compose music for a production between Hunter College and Utah University for Contemporany dance workshop in Philadelphia. He was also Invited to teach at Williams College in Massachussets. In August 2005 he was invited to conduct a drumming workshop in KOSA 10 music Festival in Vermout. He shared the stage with Kenwood Denard, Memo Acevedo, Richie Garcia, Jim Champin, Mario de Ciutiis, Jeff Hamilton, Arthur Lipner, Aldo Mazza, Cassio Duarte, Walfredo Reyes, Russ Miller, Marco Lienhard, Percurssion (International Touring Ensemble),Tyler Stewart, Ric Van Horn, Glen Valez, Rafael Alcala, Michael Wimberlly and some more in USA.Back to Mozambique in December 2005, he was invited to teach Art and Culture at Instituto Superior Maria Mae de Africa for 2 semesters ,and he was invited to be in the workshop NO BOUNDARIES between Berkley University of Music in Boston, US coordenated by well the well known musician from Mozambique Stewart Sukuma who Lindo has been working with, and Musicians from Mozambique and he was the main person at percurssion section leading workshops. He now plays traditional instruments such as Timbila(marrimba/Xilophone), all traditional drums from Mozambique, some western drums such as Djembe and Djum-Djum; Xigovia, Xivocovo, Xitende, and many small percurssion as marracas and light percurssion. Recentelly he was invited to go to National Art Academy in Oslo, Norway to teach and compose music for different dance and theatre places and he is now from september 2007 to October 2008 teaching in Norway.Contact: Mozambique (+258) 824827900.
