Situated on the corner of Devon and Egmont st.'s New Plymouth, The Basement of Peggy Gordons Celtic Bar has undergone many changes over the past decade or so. Originally named The Black Olive and used as a restaurant and undergoing several name changes, including Memories, The Cotton club(short lived live venue that hosted local bands and one Mushroom Ball. '97 I think??) and Euphoria which was a dance club that didn't last long and died a miserable death. Sometime in 2002 or 2003 the room was loaded up with pool tables and the name was again changed, this time to the Basement Bar. However it wasn't until December 2003 that a local music fan(me! haha) had become very aware of the lack of a live music venue and decided to do something about it. And with the help of some local bands and friends in the know The Basement Bar(as we now know it) was officially born.
Since then the Basement has hosted hundreds of kiwi bands and even a few international acts.(far too many to list!) With the addition of an in house P.A. system in May 2008 it seems the only way is onward and upward for The Basement. The second show ever was the infamous New Years Evil party and with New Years Evil part VII coming up soon the time just seems to have flown by in a big loud blur. Although the shows seem to be predominantly Rock/Punk/Metal shows, The Basement is open to any genre, is still available for private partys and hosts the Taranaki Comedy Club on the first Friday of every month.
