Nichts was Grey Area first, but Grey Area was already there, so Grey Area became Nichts, after first becoming Deo Volente and Extra Omnes. Nichts was actually Nichts Da initially, but then changed just because. Nichts has merged with The Nappy Rats, Will Scarlet, Land War, Haunted Sound Laboratory, Odd Man Out/BCB, Gnosis, Baznik and blackcell. Nichts writes plenty, speaks too much, and rarely sings, though that could all change soon.
Nichts is Nichts.
EXTENDED BIO-Nik L. first picked up a broken 3-string bass sometime is 1989. He eventually aligned himself with The Nappy Rats, until a chance meeting with Eric I. at Rock Island in early 1991. Having known each other from sometime, an invitation was extended to join Eric's Will Scarlet project. Will Scarlet collapsed in the Fall of '91, followed by the infamous DJ set by Nik and Eric on Halloween. Finding themselves stranded in Estes, they opted to rent an apartment rather than leave. The apartment soon became a waypoint for future luminaries, such as Jayke Hoekstra (The Heethens, The Arson Saints) and Atom O. (Statik Output, blackcell). Eric eventually resurrected his dormant Haunted Sound Laboratory at the apartment, and Nik threw down his broken bass for a broken keyboard, permanently joining the HSL ranks.Literally fleeing Estes in early 1992, Nik returned in the spring, reestablishing his ties with Eric and HSL. Little happened on either front until Nik borrowed gear from Casey Keeler (MeV) in the spring of '93, and he locked himself in a room at a Holiday Inn, producing what would become Nik's first solo tracks under the name 'Grey Area'. The production would continue well into 1994, when Nik was housed in Boulder. Then silence. Other than the odd track with HSL, Grey Area was a dead thing. Then 1997. Grey Area staggered back to life with the cassette-only release of 'Numbered Days'. The follow-up, 'Figures', soon followed, as well as collaborations with MeV, HSL, and a brief project with Atom under the guise 'Gnosis'.After releasing 'Told You So' in 1999, Nik found that another band was already using the Grey Area name, so he opted to release one more album, 'FIN', then relinquish the name forever. While pondering his next move, Nik was asked to join blackcell, and he gladly signed on. A series of live dates followed, as well as the blackcell albums 'Icon Slaves' and 'Killing Of A King'. Rejuvenated, Nik began work on what would become Nichts, while still playing live with blackcell, and playing bass with another band, Odd Man Out.In The Summer of 2002, Nik packed up and moved to Texas, leaving a Nichts album half-produced and, having sold all of his gear, no way to create new material. At least HSL's 'Eidelon' was already in the bag. Eric took up the production helm, and by polishing up some older tracks, 'Wax And Wane' was released in the spring of 2003.Laying his hands on some older equipment, Nik was able to finish the HSL album, 'The Batfield Experiment/Tapes/Source', which was released in the fall of 2005. With the same gear, Nik produced a one-off album titled 'Simplicity' in 2004, which he sent to Eric and Matt of blackcell. They liked the new sound enough to clean it up and release it as 'The Red Scare' in winter of 2005. In the interim, Nik started a new project with Basil Marciniak entitled 'Baznik'.Nik continues to contribute musically to HSL and lyrically to blackcell, as well as providing text for backwards releases and websites. As of October 2007, Nichts has indeed re-entered a studio of sorts, and is in the middle of bashing out a clutch of tracks, of which 10 or so will be used for the next Nichts release, provisionally entitled 'The Department Of Redundancy Department', to be released the summer of Whenever.
