The Oscuro Quintet is an international group of 5 accomplished musicians of diverse disciplines pursuing their collective passion for Piazzolla's compositions and embracing the co-existence of composed music and creative interpretation. With a mind toward both the music of the past and the vanguard of progression, Oscuro takes an adventurous approach to chamber music with a unorthodox ensemble and repertoire.
The quintet was born in winter of 2006 and christened in September 2007 during a 15 min. power outage in West Philadelphia.
Thomas Lee fell in love with the tango nuevo sound while studying music in Belgium. A classical pianist and carillonneur by training, and an auditory scientist in training, he hopes to one day also master the bandoneon, the quintessential tango instrument.
Multi-faceted guitarist Alban Bailly studied composition, jazz and improvisation in France. He performed regularly in Europe before moving to the US in 2005.
Currently a resident of Philadelphia, he continues to be in demand performing different genres of music with the guitar or the accordion.
Shinjoo Cho expanded on her classical training and immersed herself in the music of tango and Eastern Europe both at home and abroad. A native of Korea, she's a versatile musician and an aspiring ethnomusicologist, bringing her deepening appreciation of improvisation to music making.
