At our 'Rapped' gig at the Old Blue Last last October, the B.A.D. crew couldn't help but sense a movement on the rise. Although the room was chock-a-block with people laughing hysterically at Kelly's newly released 'Trapped In The Closet' chapters, most faces turned a little blank when our DJs started dropping hyphy, crunk and R&B classics after the movie. A feeling of sacrilege overwhelmed us as we realised, with great horror, that the nonplussed dancefloor didn’t recognise anthems like 'We Got Our Own Thang' (Heavy D & The Boyz), 'On Everything' (David Banner) or 'Tell Me When To Go' (E-40/Keak Da Sneak). So we embarked on a thug crusade, and resolved to launch the '101' series; edumacational sessions dedicated to highlighting the most fascinating artists and music scenes around, showcasing visual content (documentaries, movies, music videos, rare artist interviews) as well as sets from DJs who are self-confessed fans. And at each 101, we'll dish up free food and give out freebees reflecting the theme of the lesson.
Join us the last Sunday of every month at the Old Blue for a quick one-stop course studying the interesting, the underappreciated, the unknown, the intriguing, the unique, the straight-up bizarre...
!! THIS MONTH !!
B.A.D. Presents...MEMPHIS 101: Making Easy Money Pimpin Hoes In Style.
We'll be kicking off our dirty dirty classroom sessions with the South's wildest heartbeat, and one of hip hop's most fascinating home-grown scenes – MEMPHIS, TEN.
On Sunday, 8 June, come get buck with us as we dive deep into the development and emergence of Memphis rap, through DJ sets, music videos and three seminal films...
We'll be screening 'Hustle And Flow' , the story of an aspiring lyricist (played by Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard) who decides to escape from life as a Memphis pimp and further his dream of finding his voice in the world. Ghostwritten by Memphis legends Ska-face Al Kapone and Three 6 (whose 'It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp' on the soundtrack won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in '05), the movie is a vivid capturing of Memphis streets and its archetypal beats, bringing Memphis rap to the red carpet and beyond...
We'll also be collaborating with the Memphis Or Die! crew to set up London's premiere screening of their documentary about Memphis' underground. Without the sheen and fabricated stereotypes of a Hollywood blockbuster, Memphis Or Die! is as real as it gets. An unpolished snapshot of the scene and its mightiest players - 8Ball & MJG, Project Pat, Crunchy Black, Yo Gotti, Gangsta Boo, Skinny Pimp, Al Kapone...
More than anything, Memphis rap found its beginnings on the dancefloor, being home to buck jumping and gangsta walking. We'll be screening scenes from a ridic documentary about the Memphis dance scene, 'Gangsta Walking.' Peep a trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we6uplMk5Zg
