Youth Screenwriters Circle LIVE
Students Create Screenplays From Real-life Experiences
SARASOTA — A unique group of talented actors will take the stage at the
Florida Studio Theatre, (FST), Goldstein Cabaret, on Monday, March 30,
at 7:30 p.m., to perform nine short film screenplays, created by 8th, 9th, and 10th graders from Phoenix Academy, in Sarasota. This FREE Program is in partnership between the Youth Screenwriters Circle, Sarasota Film Festival, (SFF), AnythingArts.com, and FST.
"This year we suggested the screenwriters create and develop their screenplays around something they or someone they know experienced and had some kind of lasting impression on them," says Director of the Youth Screenwriting Circle, and Filmmaker, Debra Hussong. "The screenplays are limited to 8 minutes
in length and range from real-life to fantasy, but all are honest, raw and driven
with emotion.â€
Screenplays focus on the stories of a wannabe comedian; a deceased drug addict wanting to do a good deed before she passes over; a high school drop out looking back at his life; a good kid, gone bad, with a chance to turn things around; a gifted artist who loses her way; a teenager coping with the loss
of loved ones; a daughter writing an emotionally charged letter to her dad;
a story of a girl coping with public school after being home schooled for 13 years; and a metaphoric story about the President of the United States banning music.
Phoenix Academy is a Sarasota County public school that gives struggling students in 8th through 10th grades new opportunities to refocus their academic careers. This is the third year the school’s students have participated in the
SFF Youth Screenwriting Circle.
“I am delighted that our students are fortunate to participate in this collaborative relationship because the Screenwriting Program is a Project Based Learning Activity where students are given an opportunity to apply reading, writing and listening skills. This real-life experience also has a direct impact on student achievement.†says Phoenix Academy Principal, Dr. Rachel Shelley. “
“And, this school year we are extremely fortunate our Reading Teacher,
Mr. Christensen, joined our staff. He has an extensive background in screenwriting and next year we hope he will be teaching a screenwriting class
to compliment the Screenwriters Circle.â€
“We are so delighted that FST is hosting, Screenwriters Circle Live, in their Goldstein Cabaret Theatre, and since this is program is FREE, we hope we’ll have a huge community turn out. The screenwriters will also walk the red carpet along with our young filmmakers, at our Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase, at Whole Foods Market, on Sunday, March 29, starting at 54 p.m.,â€
adds Allison Koehler, Associate Director, SFF Outreach and Education.
Pam Wiley and Bill Muzzillo are co-directing the Youth Screenplay Circle Live performance for the second year. Bill says, “Pam and I are both very proud and excited to be showcasing screenplays written by these terrific kids.â€
