I was born February 20th, 1974, an identical twin to Elliott and Ursula Jackson of Ivy, Virginia. My name is Davina Luretta Jackson.
I have two brothers- David, and Elliot Jr. Two sisters Davita and Cindy. I have one beautiful and bright son- Atreyu Nesta.
I love to collect elephants, reading, history, writing, exercising, watching Food Network and last but not least, singing.
Singing is my passion. I have been singing since the age of 5 alongside my twin sister Davita. My career started early in life. By the age of 9 I have done numerous commercials and an major film by the BBC. The movie was Nancy Astor which starred Pierce Brosnan (Remington Steel and James Bond), Lisa Harrow, Richard Chamberlin (The Thorn Birds), and Sylvia Symms (academy award winning Queen) to name a few. I did some modeling too after this film.
Wherever there was music, you best believe I was there and doing it. Entering singing competitions like Star Search and local contests and singing of course in church. Soon I was being hired to sing at festivals, local talent events, funerals, revivals, and weddings. My love for singing in church grew strong over the years and I turned to gospel music and ventured into R&B. It wasn't until I graduated I got turned onto to reggae music. I was listening to the radio one day and won tickets to a reggae show, and I was of age now to go the numerous reggae shows they had here in Charlottesville and such.
I remember going to see Jimmy Cliff, Culture, and the Itals. off the bat I said reggae was what I wanted to sing and learn more about. The rhytms and beats astounded me.
Later that same year, I was introduced to Peanut as I would see him at every reggae show I would go to. He was performing with a band called Drummie Zeb and the Razor Possee, fro m Richmond Virginia. They had stated that they had heard us sing and wanted us to come down to Richmond for a band rehearsal because they could use some female voices in their shows. We were highly recommended. We went to the rehearsal and joined the band.
To make a long story short, ten or more years later we were traveling and opening up for major reggae bands and groups like, Culture, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytalls, Spragga Benz, Yellowman, The Meditations, The Itals, Eek a Mouse, Sister Carol, Black Uhuru, Pato banton, and Israel Vibrations to name a few. The list of artists goes on. Traveling and finally doing my passion, and getting out there grew strong.
We had traveled numerous places and met a whole heap of people and my love for reggae was intent. By the late 90's egos started to erupt in the band and everyone seemed to start falling out which did not stop me for continuing my carer in music. Peanut had got hired with Culture and Drummie went with the Wailers. The band had broke up.
Me and my sister had children at the same time and I moved to Michigan to cool off. I missed my friends and the reggae scene and decided to move back home.
I got a job working for the Dave Matthews Company, and also was going to college to get my Medical Assisting Degree. This is when I was introduced to a local blues man Corey Harris. He had signed on an independent label with Dave Matthews. He came to our workplace and asked us if we could sing on his album. He had heard about us by word of mouth and said he had to use us. The album Down home Sophisicate which earned 5 stars in Rolling Stone Magazine featured me and sis on 5 tunes which was recored, rehearsed, and done in little as 3 hours gained us notarity and the press interviewed us and we had an appearance with Corey Harris in the film From Mali to the Mississippi. This film depicted blues music and it's origins to African music. The film was directed by award winning Martin Scorese and Clint Eastwood. My career began anew again.
in 2001, to 2003 me and Davita were working toward our own album and backing up different bands and touring here and there with the Wailers. Then I started to get involved with the Itals as I have been friends with the band and Keith for years I have been with them ever since. I started my album- which is going to be called Inpspiration.
2004, became my year when I was crowned out of 50 contestants the first ever Charlottesville Superstar. This contest mimicked American Idol and was the toughest 6 weeks of my career. I had to compete against my sister, and some of the contestants complained that the contest should be amateur and shouldn't feature professionals as myself. But it was fun. I got 2500 dollars and a contract to record my own CD with The Dave Matthews company and the Music Resource Center. I haven't used my studio time which sucks but no one here is eager enough for me to deal with and they are not serious about the music.
The year is 2007 now and I haven't regret anything I have done over the years. I have been writing music, even got my nursing degree, and singing with the Itals on a regular basis and trying to get my music out there for people to enjoy as I have enjoyed them listening to me. I often do a show on the local cable station called Evoking Positive Dreams where I showcase my talent and talk about my career and controversial topics. It is sometimes funny event though I am not a major celebrity, I get stopped everywhere I go, and half of C-ville knows the twins. We even get stopped in markets and have to put on a show for my local fans and sign autographs. I love it though.
Who knows what the next decade will lead me, I will never give up on my music as God had given me a blessing beyond my years.I am ready for life to lead me where I need to be and show the world what I have to offer.
