About Me

under kat's first music video "Lay Where She May!"At seven years old, Kat Nguyen picked up her father’s classical guitar, and plucked the ten year old strings. A $20 find her father had acquired in Mexico as a young man, it was old, damaged and out of tune. Even as a child she knew right away that it was a part of her that had been missing all of her short life. She taught herself to play before she was big enough to even hold her father’s guitar, forced at first to play with the instrument lying flat in her lap since it was still too large for her little arms to cradle. She showed talent and passion for the instrument and received her first guitar as a gift on her eleventh birthday, one that fit her just right. By the time she was a teenager she was coaxing beautiful melodies and bad-ass riffs out of her companion. Singing became an internal battle as she struggled to force a common sound, something recognizable, something the same. Finally she let go of the need to conform and in doing so found her own unique voice. At sixteen she wrote her first song and from there, nothing could stop her.Kat knows only one thing for sure: music is her passion. More than a passion, music has been her friend and companion in happy and sad times alike; a place where she can find peace in this crazy upside-down world; a little beauty in all the ugly.Currently Kat is in school as a music major, foregoing once again a normal, safe, typical path. Most of her energy is spent finishing her first album, entirely self produced, and recorded mostly in the middle of the night in her bedroom when everyone else is asleep and the world is quiet enough. Much of Kat’s music is an outlet for her struggles as a young female Asian American queer coming to terms with life, society, love, politics and what she sees as the destruction of the Earth and all its creatures. Her style can be described as folksy, indie and a dabble in electronic music, but if you really want to know, just listen…
