About Me

Welcome to MY space on myspace. "Space is the place" in the words of the legendary jazz guru Sun Ra. This site is dedicated to music lovers. It’s also a portfolio, my resume so to speak. I’m a musician and I have been DOIN’ IT for a long time…working, writing, struggling, striving, learning, composing, performing, searching, experimenting, discovering, creating…Some people have no choice but to make art. It comes naturally but requires a lot of effort. When you arrive, you know it and joyfully bring your sound to the people.CrossroadsMy artistic path can be found at the crossroads of two distinct traditions, which together, create a special magic. First, there's my native Creole roots, African, French, Scotch, Irish and Choctaw Indian. I feel within me all of that history, from the finger pickin’ backwoods blues of the bayou to the ecstatic wailing trumpets on Bourbon Street to the classical music I grew up listening to. My first introduction to music was learning classical piano as a child in a house that placed a high value on the arts.In 1994, I left the country and traveled throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, Asia Minor, Eastern Europe. I lived in Paris and then headed down through Spain and spent time in Sevilla watching Flamenco guitarists playing at the street cafes. I crossed the straits of Gibraltar into Morocco. Inspired by the great Sufi poets like Rumi, Kabir, Ibn Arabi, Hafiz, Rabi’a, I wandered through Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, went inside the pyramids and slept in the ruins of crusader castles. Those experiences formed a life-time worth of images that still inform my consciousness. The greatest thing I take from that part of my life is a reverence for the awe of creation. When I play music, I am searching for the most honest expression of that infinite spirit which is constantly speaking through everything, form the smallest particle or grain of sand to the vastest of mountains, seas, galaxies.Film-Makers:Let’s talk. I have many years experience multi-tracking, creating intricate rhythm loops and ambient soundscapes with varying moods, from soulful and contemplative to ecstatic and sublime, from world music to the distinctly Americana. I feel a special calling for soundtracks. Being able to play a variety of instruments such as guitar, piano, synth, harmonica, various percussion, I am a one man band in the studio.Café’s, Weddings, Restaurants, Theater, FestivalsNeed some mellow, jazzy, ambient sounds for your wedding or event? With my loop station, I can create my own accompaniment on guitar or piano and perform light background music for social gatherings, ceremonial music, theater, restaurants. My music is available at CD Baby and other on-line distributers including itunesYou can also see more of my new videos on youtube at:youtube.com/vinceabdulkabirThanks for reading this.
