Some of you may ask, how did you come up with the name Ultimate Frisbee Orchestra? You could ask each member of the band and probably not get the same response. One fact remains however, and that is that the band has never played a game of ultimate Frisbee together, even though the 7 members of the band constitute enough for a regulation team (honestly a complete coincidence). The band actually came together in the summer of 2007 through Open Mic @ The Mousetrap Tavern is Eau Claire, WI. The event was hosted by a local musician named Caleb Horne who organized a jam featuring himself on mandolin, Tim Litscher on acoustic guitar, John Nietz on electric guitar, Justin Gardner on bass, Steve Bateman on harmonica, and Beau Brantner on drums. After the first couple of jams the group had instant chemistry. At about this time Caleb joked around about calling the group Ultimate Frisbee, and through the next several open mics the group played at the end of the night if time allowed.

At first the group was a pretty inconsistent group of musicians at each performance. After a couple of months the members began to practice and write material, but mostly played cover songs. Ultimate Frisbee began to play a few gigs here and there which melded the group together. Members John Nietz (Downer's Grove) and Beau (formerly in Aura Satori) Brantner were in other groups and were making spare time to jam with the Frisbee. Into early fall of 2007 everything was starting to fall together and group became a little more serious. It was at this point that the loss of dear friend and fellow member Justin Gardner left the group in shambles, (peace and love to Justin who will always be in our hearts), friend and bass enthusiast Dan Sebern (Day Old Bread, Three Amigos, Space Rangers) came in to play a show with the Frisbee to raise money for a music scholarship in Justin's name. After the show Dan became a permanent member of the band.

The loss of Justin was tough on the band but they started to slowly play more gigs and write more material. After another couple of months friend of the band and fellow musician Matt Jagow joined the band on the banjo, solidifying the group into the seven members it consists of today. Shortly after Justin passed the band decided to add the word "Orchestra" to the name, something Justin had wanted and that the band felt a good fit considering the seven member - acoustic/electric ensemble. UFO (Ultimate Frisbee Orchestra) plays an interesting meld of folkly, bluegrassy, traditional music combined with elements of funk, jazz, and full out rock. The UFO plays primarily around the Chippewa valley area and will soon be expanding and "throwing the disc" elsewhere in the Midwest!
