About Me
Studio 1219 is the result of Port Huron's Cool City project launched in response to Governor Granholm's Cool City initiative which seeks to strengthen and enhance the connection between arts, culture, and economics...
Studio 1219The Community Foundation of St. Clair County received a $99,000 grant from the State as seed money to support the renovations to the building-previously a furniture building in the 1900's. The remainder of the necessary funding for building renovations and improvements has come from the James C. Acheson Foundation. Port Huron Arts Incubator (Studio 1219) is owned through a joint venture of the Port Huron Downtown Development Authority and the Community Foundation of St. Clair County. Studio 1219 is located on the south side of Port Huron within the boundaries of the Community Renaissance Program. The location was chosen to help serve as a catalyst in the economic revival of Port Huron's south side neighborhoods.
Studio 1219 provides a physical link between the thumb regions's growing community of artists and the businesses of downtown Port Huron. Charged with nurturing artists and making the arts accessible to the community, Studio 1219 houses the largest public art gallery in Michigan's Thumb Region. With over 8,000 square feet of total space, it features an educational department, a pottery studio, workshop space, open space for classes and community functions, and opportunities for small arts related businesses. As an incubator, Studio 1219 rents space at below market rates for artists who want to start their own business. The Studio provides assistance with business plans and promotion. In 2006, three tenants moved out of the studio and opened their own business in downtown store fronts.
Studio 1219 already has two new tenants which bring a whole new set of foot traffic into downtown Port Huron. The educational classes and art gallery provide artists and patrons of all skill levels with the opportunity to practice, display, sell, and buy artwork. Studio 1219's Pottery and Glass Studio, which was made possible by a generous grant from Citizens First Bank of Port Huron, is accessible to the experienced potter and novice student.
Studio 1219 finished with a strong showing in 2006. The studio helped nurture three fledgling artists into their own downtown businesses, sold over $38,000 in artwork, paid over $26,000 to artists, grossed over $23,000 in classes, and paid over $8,000 to instructors. Lastly, Studio 1219 hired an Operations Director, the final step in becoming a self sustainable entity.
For 2007 Studio 1219 will continue to offer a wide variety of art classes for all ages. From pottery to glass, to painting, drawing, yoga, tai chi, and even wine tasting, Studio 1219 offers a variety of artistic and cultural delights. For more detailed information on our classes, opportunities to rent space for a meeting, reception, or birthday party, tenant applications, artists on display, and our current tenants delve into our website or call 810-984-ARTS.
Every month the Studio features one artist in the Van Gogh gallery and rotates new artwork throughout the various galleries. Every month the studio hosts a free reception for the public to meet our featured artist in the Van Gogh gallery. Check out our calendar of events for details. Studio 1219 creates a gathering place for our local Creative Class and is well on its way to turning Port Huron into a cultural destination for people throughout Michigan.I have edited my layout at Crazyprofile.com
