Our world is being hi-jacked from us. Many of us sleep through the night while, our liberties are being stripped from us, while global warming is well underway, while laws that allow for deadly working conditions in 3rd world countries are being passed, while dozens of MY and YOUR high school friends and classmates are off to fight, what in my opinion, is an unjust war.
While we fight for what we believe (i use the word 'we' because the majority against this war DOES EXIST), many call us unpatriotic, but im here to say, that my right as an American to speak out against injustice, my right to help 'alter or abolish' facets of our government that have sold itself out is a beautiful right, and that right belongs to you, whether we share the same ideas and values, or NOT! That is the America I choose to believe in.
Was the women's suffrage movement subversive? Yes. Was it patriotic? Yes. Was the civil rights movement subversive? Yes. Was it patriotic? Yes. Was the quest to have an eight-hour workday or to get children out of coal mines subversive? Yes. Those ideas were insane when they were first raised. But they were clearly patriotic, with a small p. I think that dissent and broadly defined subversion is a crucial historical strain in America. All progressive change has come from that.
