Formed in 2001, this San Francisco-based electronic rock outfit has made a name for itself by pushing the boundaries of a genre once confined to a synthesizer and sample library. With dynamic live shows and a heavy black metal influence, Psyclon Nine has broken away from the traditional electronic formula to create a more accessible and inventive sound that has won them acclaim on the industrial and metal scene.
After building up a strong reputation locally with a home-recorded demo and a number of notoriously aggressive concerts, Noitekk head Marco Gruhn approached the band and persuaded them to sign to his label. ‘Divine Infekt’, the band’s first album, was recorded shortly thereafter. They tapped Da5id Din of Informatik to produce the record and European aggrotech favorites Tactical Sekt to remix the title track. The 2003 release was well received by clubgoers and industrial enthusiasts across the US and Europe.
The band toured at home and abroad in support of the album, playing with bands including Dismantled, Nocturne, Feindflug, Aslan Faction, Grendel, and American
industrial rock figurehead Martin Atkins on his spoken word tour.
Travels through metal strongholds in Europe gave the band a taste for something far more ambitious for their second record. It is on 2005’s ‘INRI’ that Psyclon Nine’s abilities to cross genres became apparent. The band incorporated metal-infused guitars, dramatic orchestral breaks, and vivid vocals around their signature electronic sound.
The inventive tracks gained the notice of Metropolis Records, who signed the band to a stateside deal in time to distribute the record. Noitekk continued to distribute the disc in the European market.
‘INRI’ gained the attention of industrial and metal fans and garnered the respect of their peers. Based on the strength of the record, Psyclon Nine headlined the German Wave Gotik Treffen festival [with an attendance of over 30,000] and toured as the supporting act for alternative weirdos Mindless Self Indulgence before embarking on several headlining tours throughout the US and Europe in support of the release.
Psyclon Nine are currently touring in support of the follow up to ‘INRI’ entitled ‘Crwn Thy Frnicatr’. The record, which makes even greater use of traditional rock instruments intermingled with warped electronic programming, has been widely embraced by the metal and hardcore community as well as their traditional industrial fan base. After a sold-out five week tour as direct support of progressive metal favorites Mushroomhead, they were invited back for a Hot Topic sponsored co-headlining nine week tour beginning in September followed by a headlining tour of their own.
