I am here for Friends

About Me

My name is David and I am a writer & freelance photojournalist, British born, currently living in Australia. I have recently returned to Australia from North Africa to recover after some rather extensive injuries and less than efficacious surgery. I am in a slowly disintegrating relationship but am not looking for romantic attachments, just new friends. I will see this relationship through to its inevitable conclusion before looking elsewhere. The lady in question is a very special person and has remained loyal to me while I was incapacitated, but appears no longer exclusive to me; she seems to have drifted away emotionally. She has grown a lot and moved in new directions, while I am pretty much the same person that I always have been. I feel that once my recovery is complete (more surgery shortly) she will want to go her own way, following a career that takes her away from me.
I am ex Royal Navy and have spent much of my life at sea. I lived for many years on a ketch rather than in a house. I have grown children from a previous relationship, all of whom are brilliant in every way. I am very proud of them. I am a fitness enthusiast, very athletic; I sail, swim, windsurf, ride and kayak, but am no longer able to run competitively as a consequence of the injuries I sustained recently. I enjoy good (but nutritious) food, good wine, am an able cook. I love jazz, R&B, early Rock, some classical. I like Diana Krall, Patricia Kaas, Leonard Cohen, Rita Coolidge, Roberta Flack, etc., etc. Basically I like music. I read a lot, maintain several blogs for other people (I have been online since well before the advent of the WWW (1984)
I have a sense of humour and like to exercise it regularly. :) I have a much loved dog, a disdainful cat (it's the dog's pet, not mine - really ... ) I ride motorbikes (VTwins, not cafe racers) and drive an old, somewhat battered little convertible that I love and probably will never part with. (I do have a more modern sedan but seldom drive it.) I have a great many skills and hobbies, (the result of lots of energy and a dread of boredom) too many to detail in a summary, but basically a very wide range of interests.
What else? I am not wealthy, but I am comfortable, I own a waterfont home, owe no money but still need my commissions and royalties to ensure a pleasant lifestyle. (I will probably work well into my seventies.) I am a non-smoker, and moderate social drinker. I am 47, have an athletic build and greying hair (started greying in my teens) but not receding so far. I have a good IQ and a love of learning coupled with a love of life.
My flaws are probably a quick temper (usually well controlled) a lack of tolerance for those who create their own problems and expect others to solve them, a lack of appreciation for the PC world (Politically Correct that is - not the IT variety PC), a degree of arrogance and sometimes a little more enthusiasm than may be wise. Oh yes, plus an inability to resist deflating over-inflated egos. I am sure that many of my closer acquaintances and family members can add immeasurably to my list of flaws, but that will do for now.
I think that pretty well sums me up, at least superficially, there is of course much more as there is with most people.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Stephen Hawking, Leonard Cohen, and if we include historical figures, William Blake, Plato, Homer, Jesus, Leonardo da Vinci. All are extremely interesting people. I have a fascination with history.
