About Me

826michigan believes that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. To make that a reality, they provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
It is 826michigan’s philosophy that the more fun a student has, and the more directly they speak to a student’s interests, the more they can help students find the fun in learning. All programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice. And best of all, all 826michigan events and activities are offered completely free of charge, thanks to generous private donations, grants, and fundraising events.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

YOU! Finally, you know. 826michigan is accepting enthusiastic people with hearts of gold, or salsa (not hearts of salsa, just people who happened to have stumbled upon a large supply of salsa to share, preferably of the medium spice level), to be our volunteers!
Here are the rolls our Volunteers eat:
Tutor: We offer tutoring throughout the school year, Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30. We train our tutors (through a program that Eastern Michigan has helped create), so there is no experience required. Any time you can give, from one hour a month to three hours a day, will directly improve a student’s life. You will also receive a button, or you can make one on our massive button making machine. These are the kind of thrills you have been searching for but never thought you'd find...UNTIL NOW.
Workshop Leader: Got an idea for a great workshop? Contact us and we’ll help you set it up, fill the attendance sheet, and make everything work. Everyone loves a teacher!
Workshop Helper: Help make a good workshop great! Helpers help (get it?) with every part of a workshop, including working one-on-one or with small groups of students.
Intern: Nothing says "resume gold" like an internship with 826michigan. You’ll help teach, assist in grant writing and organizational management, and even wear a tie from the late eighties (last item is not optional).
Volunteer Coordinator: Help us keep in touch with our greatest asset—you! Well, other people too, but they will be people like you. And we need that.
Fundraising: Have experience as a grant writer? We need you. Want to help plan and organize fundraising events? We need you. Have connections to people like the Rockefeller Family? Oh yes, we need you.
Field trips: Have time open during the day? We need volunteers to help conduct field trips to 826. Anyone with writing, drawing, copyediting, book layout, or publishing experience or interest who can help would be greeted with much rejoicing, and possibly a flower necklace.
We also need skilled individuals to do any number of the billion and one things that need to get done around here.

Disgruntled NO MORE

In an effort to do more things that television tells me to do, I stepped into Subway yesterday on my way to 826 and smelled something in the air.  No it was not chiptotle mayonaisse or ...
