Texas Pete Mayes

About Me

Born in 1938, Texas based Pete Mayes has been a part of the Texas blues scene for more than 50 years. Growing up in the small Texas town of Double Bayou, he moved to Houston in 1960, which was becoming home for many Texas blues performers.
Mayes played guitar with greats like Junior Parker and Bill Doggett. He has fronted his own band, the Houserockers, for 40+ years. Mayes still owns and maintains the historic Double Bayou Dancehall, which once served as a regular venue for Amos Milburn, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Joe Turner, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and scores of others. It was there that Mayes, then just 16 years old, first heard T-Bone Walker and was put on the path his life was to take.
His musical style, both on vocals and guitar, is smooth, relaxed, and understated. He blends blues, easy texas shuffle, and R&B styles to create a sound that's all his own.
As much as Pete's been inspired by the greats that he grew up waching, Mayes has been a major influence on two generations of players.
This man is one of the true legends of the inimatable Gulf Coast blues sound.
