About Me

"Somebody pulled the hair right out of my head, something so small....not me that's pointing a knife, admit that you're wrong not to matter..." (from "Talon of the Blackwater and Graces"). "Talon of the Blackwater", third independent release for this singer/songwriter and Berklee graduate, melds classical, folk, jazz, art rock and new age with "stream of consciousness lyrics". Anti-popular, counter-culture, complex and enthralling, lush music confronts its listeners with all that's horrid and true, transformed in the deep, resonating center where one becomes oneself. Produced by Jay Hovnanian, mastered by Jeff Lipton and featuring Michael Farquharson (MCA artist/Juno nominee), T Lavitz (Grammy nominee of the Dixie Dregs), Eugene Friesen (Grammy winning Paul Winter Consort), Nate Comp (Josh Logan Band), Nick Falk and Marcelo Woloski (Maeve Gilchrist Group), Bruce J. LeBlanc and Alastair Moock. With a voice Bob Ludwig calls "unique and very pure", Laura melds an inventive, textured & rhythmic keyboard style with "the soul and lyrics of a true poet" (Indie-Music Reviews). Her first two albums, "when I left loss" and "Love Flows Like the Blood of a River" (with Eugene Friesen, cello, and Steve Wilkes, percussion) combine songs and spoken word pieces that "lend a riveting, personal touch and at times cut so deep the hair on the listener's skin goes on end".Laura has played at art festivals and venues around the United States. She's opened for John Gorka, Cheryl Wheeler, Connie Kaldor, Dana Cooper, Brooks Williams and Lori McKenna.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.laurasiersema.com
Band Members: Laura Siersema (vocals & piano/keyboard) Wim Auer (fretless bass) Billy Klock (percussion/drums)
Influences: I can tell you what I love--George, riding my bicycle and this task in life that I have to write. Pat Metheny, Michael Hedges, Joni Mitchell, Villa-Lobos, Gavin Bryars, Messiaen, Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel to start, if you're talking about music... steak tips and greens if you're talking about my favorite dish at the Pint... George Eliot, Henry James, Edith Wharton, Emily Dickinson and Rainer Maria Rilke if you mean books... sitting down to play at the piano, drawn to Debussy and Chopin when I was a teenager, later to the patterns of Bach and all the while to contemporary songwriters, now more and more to contemporary classical composers for I am hearing in them exactly what it is to be alive in this world today... the basement of the church in Jamaica Plain where I used to vocalize, the entire process of learning how to sing in the bel canto tradition... and so many other things I could hardly begin to tell you--the smell of a lake, fall leaves, little animals... and wind, I love wind!
