Anwar Superstar, born Anwar Khalil Prescott, began rapping at the age of 14 on the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Anwar has been staying sharp by entering into various ciphers battling MC’s from all over the US and abroad. No matter where Anwar unleashed his distinct energetic flow, he was guaranteed to get the respect that his quick-witted and on point punch lines were designed to deliver.
Anwar’s skills have been admired by some of Hip-Hop’s most established MC’s. Hip-Hop legend and pioneer KRS ONE has requested for Anwar to exhibit his lyrical prowess alongside him on stage, as well as Lil Kim whom he has opened for at NYC’s B.B. Kings. Anwar has also been on tour many times with various artists such as M.O.P., Pharohe Monch, Kanye West, Common, Cormega, Talib Kweli, and Grammy and Emmy nominated Mos Def.
Many have asked how Anwar inherited the name “Superstarâ€. In his own brash way he’d say, “I was born that wayâ€, but in all actuality the Superstar moniker comes from fellow MC and mentor Mos Def. Mos Def declares, “Anwar is a Superstar due in part to the way people naturally gravitate to him and hang on his every word whether he’s on or off the stage.â€
Anwar’s confidence is supported by the fact the he is well rounded musically from being introduced to various genres of music at an early age. Anwar incorporates his diverse musical taste into the words he chooses and tracks he selects to express his thoughts. Anwar’s writing talent was noticed early on when he became a published poet as a teenager.
Anwar’s song creation is quite a unique process in the sense that he never writes down any of his songs. Most M.C.’s use a pen and pad to scribe their rhymes, not Anwar. To sum it up- Anwar spits, “I scribe what I see in my mind but you can read it on my voiceâ€. The ability to configure hundreds of rhymes in his head shows the genius this M.C. possesses. Anwar describes his passion saying, “When I listen to a beat, the beat and I have a conversation. You all call it a songâ€.
