Here is some other assorted interesting tidbits, the former freight depot and yard was located in downtown Santa Maria, just walking distance from the Santa Maria Town Center Mall. Country singer Rodney Atkins played in the Maverick Saloon just two blocks away in April 2006 just before he hit it big. Also just blocks away is the Santa Barbara County Courthouse where Michael Jackson was tried several years ago. The yard is now closed and the right of way ends at McClelland Street
Walt Disney joined Captain Hancock in the cab of steam engine #21 for its last run in February 1962. The SMVRR was one of the last railroads in the West to run main line steam. The SMVRR was once one of the most profitable short line railroads in the West, hauling well over 20,000 carloads per year on just 32 miles of main line track.
The Santa Maria Valley Railroad's yard facilities and corporate offices are now located in the Betteravia Industrial Park, site of the former Union Sugar Mill in Betteravia. That location has been rail served since 1897 when the plant was opened and the Pacific Coast Narrow Gauge Railroad served the plant. Across the street a large feedlot was located utilizing the by products of sugar beet production to feed the cattle. A 2 foot gauge railroad served the feedlot and there was a network of track in the feedlot.
