Bronwyn Boyer is a folk / rock / blues / jazz / roots / progressive singer-songwriter, born Bronwyn Rose Boyer in Bracebridge, Canada on July 14, 1982. From an early age, it was clear that music was in her blood. Her mother, Alison Boyer, a singer / songwriter musician and piano technician is especially known for her dynamic harmonica playing, and her father, Imre de Jonge, a Dutch landed-immigrant, toured as a drummer with several bands throughout the 1970s and 80s. At the age of 6, Bronwyn began formal violin training, and received a grade 8 certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as a grade 2 certificate in Musical Theory. After playing in various string groups, classical violin competitions, and a couple of stage shows, she spent time as her mother's fiddle player and back-up vocalist in various local venues, including the Mariposa Folk Festival, where she also performed a song or two of her own music. At the onset of her adolescent years, Bronwyn grew weary of interpreting music from a page and developed the urge to compose and create her own material. She picked up her mother's left handed guitar and started inventing chord progressions, which she subsequently added lyrics to. This led to the exploration of piano, which was always available due to her mother's profession. From this, a series of piano songs was born. Fortuitously, Her mother also had a vintage Rogers drum kit in the basement, which, inspired by the style of Stuart Copeland of The Police, she tried her hand at and fell in love with. In her high school years, she was the drummer in a rock band called Slight Return.Along the way, she also expressed her love for painting, poetry, and acting. Since then, she has been a prolific songwriter, painter, and poet, developing a unique and dynamic style while majoring in English at the University of Toronto. Throughout this period, the songs never stopped flowing.Bronwyn’s guitar style is very rhythmic and percussive. Because of that, comparisons will inevitably be made to artists like Bruce Cockburn and Ani di Franco, and while they may be strong influences, so are countless others. Her idols incluide Kate Bush, Michael Jackson, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, The Mars Volta, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Suzanne Vega, Don Ross, Bob Marley, Steven Fearing, Tom Waites, and all the giants of blues, bluegrass, soul, jazz, rock, progressive rock, folk, funk, or any amalgamation of those styles that displays consciousness artistry and depth of expression. Her familiarity with the musical lexicon is encyclopedic, spanning many decades. Her approach to guitar in particular is unorthodox and experimental, and from the outset she’s used her own tuning schemes, inventing all her chords from scratch. Her inventions on piano are equally funky and rhythmic.During her time in university, her style expanded and became more unique. Although she had made a few demos up to that point, they never saw the light of day. However, it was during this period that she made her first "light of day" demo, Seven Songs EP.After graduating from U of T in 2006, Bronwyn returned to Muskoka to record her first full length debut album, Release. The catalogues of unreleased songs she had written on guitar and piano had built up so much that she had enough material to fill several albums, and the prolific bent continued.Although Bronwyn hasn't yet hit the scene with her backlog of still-in-hiding material, the recordings won't languish much longer. After three years in the making, Release is set to hit the airwaves this spring.
