This cause is not something new. I began it last year because I felt that the liberal (well at least the southern part & most populated) state of Maine should put an end to recognizing Columbus Day as a holiday. I would like to see an Indigenous Peoples Day in its place. Seeing how there are 5 tribes of the Wabanaki Confederation in Maine, there should be a day to recognize them. Many states have already abolished the holiday and have held protests for years. I believe that in order to get this holiday unrecognized we must start with getting it removed from our states, and once this movement begins than we will be able to influence the country to remove it as well. However, there is an online petition you can sign to get Columbus Day removed as a federally recognized holiday:

This year, unfortunately, I will not be holding a protest/rally. I have moved back to NYS to raise my first son, with the help of my partner, mother, and brother. As they say it takes a community to raise a child. However, we do plan to move back to the state of Maine, once we have a sufficient funds to go back and live on our own. Then the movement will be up and running again.
