It is well known that the Cuban Art Academy of Fine Arts named San Alejandro located in Havana, Cuba has enjoyed the recognition of the art connoisseurs and the world during several decades.
For hundreds of students who passed the academy from the 70's and 80's until nowadays it was like being trapped in house of walls with no windows to avoid seeing the big changes of the artistic world and although this site is not intended to rely on political issues, it’s not avoidable to state that; unfortunately; that was the reality that the artist, well known as "Shapay" and many others had to go through in order to complete their studies in an academy where highly talented masters who could not state openly their artistic perceptions and concepts about the social surroundings and its deadly convulsions and what's worse...about their personal dreams.Maybe that's why when any observer has the opportunity to enjoy any of Shapay's artworks will always have the impression of seeing images that belong to some uncertain time and place. You will see the art of a very exquisite provider of the most deep "sentiments" into paper or canvas...you will see what is felt and cannot be stated by simple words.Shapay entertains the attention of any observer from any level and always leaves a sublime impression of visual “organicity†in an environment of lyrical spiritualism. His drawings show with no doubt the enormous control of all the techniques that he develops on paper. The effect of transparences, refined lines and fading shapes with his "chiaroscuro" make of Shapay's works a vivid representation of what he calls his "visions of angels...with silent noise".His works have become very organic and full of visual transitions, from the strange and capricious dialogue of surrealistic propositions to the silent innocence of almost unfinished faces that seem to whisper secrets from an unknown place of his own imagination and make us feel happy and reflexive when we look at them. He expresses ideas through his art like a bohemian trovadour, who performs his art with a simple pen and a piece of paper instead of using musical instruments. During years he has worked on various themes that depicted the nature of the simple human beings with flowered hats or beautiful cubanas, all uncombed and bursting flowers and birds from their hair. Some art critics have stated that Shapay’s works are extended within a spectrum that goes from semi-abstract forms to very poetical compositions as if he wanted to explain visually the origins of the human sentiments.
