Rockin' For Raven!

When healthy babies are born, no one thinks about anything but their life and all they have to look forward to. When a baby is born with Cystic Fibrosis, you already start considering their death. Will she live through her childhood? Will she live to be a teenager? Will she be one of the lucky ones to make it to adulthood? You learn of all the ways the disease will slowly work to destroy her body. All the potential complications she'll face as a CF patient from damaging lung infections, organ transplants, CF related diabetes, osteoporosis, sterility, etc. You wonder what path her disease will take and how long before it will take her. You wonder once she becomes aware of her mortality, how will she face it? Will she become self destructive because of it? Will she become rebellious as a teenager and not do what she has to do to keep herself healthy taking years off her already potentially shortened life span? How can I balance protecting her health, while at the same time letting her live a fulfilling life. How can I help her live a normal life when so much of her days are spent in hospital facing painful and traumatic medical procedures? How could I possibly deal with the thought of loosing my daughter? Well, just like Raven, who fought with every ounce of her being to protest all that was inflicted upon her being born a CF baby, I too am a fighter. Raven comes by it rightly. When you have a kid with a chronic illness, you often feel helpless but I refuse to let that feeling of helplessness overcome me. I will fight with every ounce of my being to make sure I do all I can to fight this disease that threatens to take my baby from me. Rockin' For Raven is not just about Raven. She is one of the many faces of people battling this disease and we are a reflection of all the families out there who deal with loving someone with CF and backing them in their fight.
