About Me

I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and grew up just across the Ohio River in New Albany, Indiana. I began learning guitar when I was eight years old. In the early 1980s, I was first introduced to the stage and studio by my cousin, Dale Cashon, a veteran musician and songwriter, who now organizes several Blues Festivals around the Louisville area, including the Jeffersontown/Gaslight Blues Festival. In the mid-1980s, I met producer/musician extraordinaire, Todd Smith. I then wrote and recorded two five-song EPs in Todd's small basement studio. The EPs were entitled "Midwestern Dreams" and "No Free Lunch," respectively. It was during this time that I began the first of several incarnations of "Roz Tate Bands" and began shopping songs to record companies and publishers. In the late 1980s, I recorded a CD called "What About It," on the local Bongo Records label. The album was recorded by Todd Smith and Rick Miller and co-produced by Todd Smith. The cut "Storm Chasin' the Wind" gained airplay on over 25 commercial and college radio stations. WTTS in Bloomington, Indiana and WUTK in Knoxville, Tennessee played multiple cuts from the album. WQXE, which served the Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Ft. Knox, KY areas, put "Storm..." into heavy rotation! Unfortunately, by 1991 the record label was defunct and the Roz Tate Band disbanded. In the mid-1990s, I continued to write, record and shop songs in Nashville, play local acoustic & semi-acoustic gigs, and do occasional showcases. I usually played with my long-time friend and Roz Tate Band member Paul Nevitt. Paul is a great keyboard and guitar player, singer and engineer...he's not bad on the bass either! I also played with the great sax virtuoso Rick Debow, the platinum-album producing Todd Smith as well as with vocalist and friend, Dawn Weaver. There were other guests who sat in at times and we had fun and delivered some really strong performances. I almost landed a record deal with Nashville's Core Records through A & R man, Ted Mellemcamp. Money, however, finally became a huge problem and after the Core deal fell through (it was soooooo close...ugh!!!), I took some years off from music and went back to school to get BA and MA degrees. Before I knew it, over 10 years had passed, but...HERE WE ARE!! It's 2007 and I am now "of a certain age," but I am writing and playing again. I am playing acoustically and semi-acoustically this time around. Also, a new album is recorded, mixed and mastered and I hope will be pressed and released in the near future. The 1990 release "What About It" will be available at gigs and possibly at a few select stores in the Louisville/Southern Indiana area. Look for 'em!Rock on...we must.Roz Tate...Sept.6, 2007
