WELCOME TO THE WEIRDLY SWAMPY, HAIR-RAISING, CRUNCHY, TWISTED COCKTAIL OF MEATY SURF-NOIR-MOTORCYCLE-HILLBILLY ROCK THAT ONLY VEAL CAN DELIVER.
Veal joins an elite corps in the tradition of revolutionary rock trios, using twisted lyrical imagery that culls up the likes of Tom Waits, Lou Reed, or Elvis Costello, but rocks out like a Cramps/Dick Dale/Iggy Pop orgy.
The trio is led by baby-faced phenom Luke Doucet, whose singing is often compared to Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright or Cracker's David Lowery and whose ingenuity on the six string is virtually without peer. Anchored by the legendary animal-machine-man Chang on drums, and recently joined by Edmonton’s punk rock king pin Nik Kozub on bass, Veal is one of the brightest torches in the underground music scene. The Embattled Hearts was recorded at Greenhouse Studios in Vancouver under the helm of noted rock producer Steven Drake (Odds, Tragically Hip, 54-40, Marcy Playground). As intended, the record sounds like one from a sweaty-necked three piece combining the odd forays into both Who-inspired demi-prog territory and Fugazi truth-core. The record marks a return to Luke’s rock and roll roots with an arsenal of hit songs, many of which have been road-tested, tried, and true... representing the musical soul of the project which has developed over time, sweat & beer.
