At first sight, this lovely songbird might have the tendency to weigh heavily on the eyes. Yet, at just one year of age she was singing bits of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On†and putting on shows for her family using a hairbrush as a microphone.
Born July 21, 1987 to a Puerto Rican mother and African-American father in south-side Jamaica Queens, Lizzette Tyis Carter has since birth held a strong desire for music. “My mother said (while she was pregnant) whenever she listened to music, I would go crazy.†At age 10, she moved to Queensbridge and was slowly side-tracked by her interest in clothing and style. “I had a passion for fashion and really wanted to be a designer. I would cut up and sew things for me and my cousins to wear, but it wasn’t what I loved. Music was always in my heart.â€
Lizzette would sing constantly; Karen White’s “Superwoman†was a definite favorite of the bright young star. As she tells it, her early childhood years were spent taking in magnitudes of music from several different genres. She loved Whitney Houston and Teena Marie, but even entertained herself with a few alternatives. “I can remember begging my mother to buy me a No Doubt cd and she thought I was crazy!†she laughs.
It wasn’t long before Platinum-selling hip-hop artist, Fat Joe, had also recognized the fountain of talent in this well and supported the young woman in her endeavors. At age 17, she met the Latino rapper at a Puerto Rican Day Parade. As a dare to friends, Lizzette sang Alicia Keys’ hit song “If I Ain’t Got Youâ€. “He loved it,†she says with a smile. From that point on, she had much more to smile about. After signing a 1-year contract with Terror Squad (in association with Atlantic Records), this star-in-the-making flew to Miami to record two songs with producers Cool and Dre, one of which she co-wrote. She’s also had a vocal feature in the animated film “Happy Feetâ€.
Lizzette is well on her way to a successful debut and proving herself to be an artist worthy of international recognition. She is guaranteed to supply some serious heat for both radio and clubs nationwide, so get ready to be mesmerized. Soon, the whole world will be giving both Lizzette and her producers praise.
