About Me

I'm a songwriter mostly, a singer/songwriter sometimes. I started writing songs when I was 17, as soon as I picked up my first guitar - my mom and dad bought me a baby blue electric guitar - really ugly but it served me well. Bought a Martin when I was 19 and have never really played anything else. I started writing songs because I couldn't find something on the radio that fit my mood. Went to New York City and lived in Greenwich village, played at some nice places, like Gerde's Folk City and the Other End. I lived in Nashville too, played a couple of times at the Bluebird - great place - met some famous songwriters. My friend Dan Mohs and I formed a duo back in Minnesota and played together until I moved to Australia. I live in Sydney now with my wife and family. A beautiful city. This is my first solo album. It was produced by Michael McGlynn, one of the best around. He's done a great job with the songs - really brought them to life. If you need a producer who knows his stuff, you can find Michael on MySpace. He's ugly, but he's a great musician and has the ear of a great producer. Please visit my website at www.brianelkington.com to listen to the other songs, download or buy the cd. CD Baby is the worldwide distributor. It's also available on iTunes and a lot of other digital music stores.By the way, Dan and I just recorded and released (as of Feb 2008) a CD of songs on an album called "Winter Wine". Visit our MySpace (look for Elkington Mohs) or go to CD Baby, iTunes etc.

Influences: Where to start: Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Jackson Browne, Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Stevie Wonder, Carol King, The Eagles, Boz Scaggs, George and Ira Gershwin, Sammy Cahn, Damien Rice, James Taylor, Cole Porter, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Eva Cassidy - and a lot more.
Sounds Like: People have said I sound like everyone from Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor to Jack Johnson and John Mayer. I don't really think so - though I'm flattered by any such comparison. Leo Kotke once compared his voice to "goose farts on a muggy day" - I think that applies to me too. Or maybe a gopher on a barbed wire fence. I hope you enjoy the songs anyway.
