About Me

.. ..

My name is Julian Dutton, of Monkey Among Chimps Imaging. I am a fourth generation native of Enid, Oklahoma. I have wondered the fields, lots and back alleys of this town my whole life. I have had an interest in photography, shooting as a hobby with much enjoyment for twenty-five years. It was only in the recent past that personal life events have catalyzed an artistic epiphany of sorts. Another dimension of my vision suddenly revealed. I had spent my life, like so many of us do, eyes looking straight ahead, seeing only with tunnel vision. As of late, I began noticing what lies in the periphery, allowing this information access to a deeper part of myself. I began to SEE.

Now, beauty and emotion all around, plain to see. I decide to primarily focus on that which is not conventionally considered esthetically pleasing. In the corner of your eye, on the ground passing beneath your feet, my eyes find their playground. Much as someone might fall for the mutt in the pound, I have fallen for things ordinarily overlooked, things that make you work to appreciate their charms.

Prominent in Japanese folklore are "Yokai"., sprits or demons that live all around. Some avoid humans, others concentrate around human dwellings. One type inhabit dwellings , machinery and implements abandoned by humans. My belief is not necessarily in spirits or ghosts. Rather, I like to think that there are places in our hearts that resonate to the echoes of the past. The abandoned, derelict and discarded call to me. There is beauty in the broken. These things may be finally finding their rest in the process of entropy, Nature’s gradual reclamation of what was once hers.

My hope is that , as you view my images, you ponder the possible stories associated with the subjects therein. The tool that a man labored with for years to put food on the table. The car where young lovers stole their first kiss. The house that bore witness to generations of births, deaths, joys and tragedies, and, not insignificantly, folks just living their daily lives. Just as you are doing now. Think of these things, open more than just your eyes, SEE, and enjoy!
