"I AM THE E-N-T IN ENTERTAINMENT"These are the words spoken from the mouth of Dana Ramey A.K.A. “Dee Jay Dana:†one of Atlanta’s best kept secrets. You can find him in the September/October 2007 issue of “Scratch†Magazine under the “Front Lines†series. In the last six months there has really been a buzz around the one time DJ, Dee Jay Dana. It may be all the music he’s making and A-list artists he has singing on his during 2007. During this year alone, Dee Jay Dana has Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Young Joc, Guerilla Zoe, and Atlanta’s own Boyz-N-Da-Hood recording on his music. He also has future sessions scheduled with 8 Ball and Ice Cube. You may wonder where a man with these connections comes from. Well Dee Jay Dana is a native son of Atlanta- born at Grady Hospital. As a young child his family moved from Perry Homes to Ben Hill in the Swats (Southwest Atlanta). After 10 years in the Swats he moved to College Park/East Point in South Atlanta. There he was groomed by DJ Smooth Matty Matt as a musical prodigy. After many sessions with Matty Matt, “Dee Jay†Dana was born and started his ascent to the pinnacle of his profession. His journey started doing parties on the Southside and at Price and Therrell High Schools. During this time a rivalry began with another big name producer from the area, DJ Toomp. After about 4 years on the party scene in Atlanta, Dee Jay Dana took his show on the road with the U.S. Navy. This road took him overseas through Europe and landed him in Spain where he learned Spanish and honed his worldwide flavor for music production. After three years in Spain he returned to the States at the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. During this time Dee Jay Dana was able to really focus and started creating his own sound. According to Dana, the town was “really old and country†with little or no social life. “There was only one booty club and the dancers were yo momma and mine, where all of them had band-aids covering their nipples.†While there Dana met DJ Brown, the main DJ in town, and the two paired up to take over the town. “Boy we made a lot of money†recalls Dana. The experience also boosted Dana’s confidence and skill level. After conquering Maryland he felt ready to move up from the minors to the major league. What better time and place to move to than the place of his origin: the new Motown, Atlanta, GA.Dana returned to Atlanta in 1995. During this time Laface Records was running the city and the hot artists were Organized Noise, Dallas Austin, TLC, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Monica, and Jermaine Dupri. Atlanta was a hotbed and everyone wanted in. Dana decided to focus on deejaying and began crafting beats. Dana was well aware of the long lineage between DJ’s and music production. So he felt that should he take advantage of his knowledge and experience. Upon his return he began networking and met ATL rapper “The Hitman, Sammy Sam.†This meeting led to a collaboration on an underground album that did not have any commercial success, but it did build more professional experience for his music resume. Around 2004, Dana met ATL rapper Big Gee (of Boyz-N-Da-Hood) who was a solo artist at the time. They began burning the midnight oil in the studio and crafting his sound. Soon after, the word on the street began to spread, and word got back to the Block (Block Entertainment and Bad Boy South). Big Gee introduced Dana to Block and explained that Dana was a master. “I was a great producer who could craft beats, write songs, sing hooks, and engineer Pro Tools: the standard for most studiosâ€. So to win Block over Dana recorded a demo with Gee. The demo was well received and Dana was welcomed with open arms to Block Entertainment as an in-house producer. This new gig gave Dana around-the-clock access to all the artists under Block Entertainment. This also allowed him to work solely on his music which has truly liberated him. Dana is currently focused on forging relationships with Diddy, Monica, Bobby Brown, DJ Quick, Plics, Lil’ Scrappy, Greg Street, and Carmello Anthony’s artist Berg.Dana credits Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Hancock, and George Duke as his musical influences. He believes his experience and longevity have equipped him with the skill to make great music and maintain a high level of success in the music business...
