The Soul Geek Network ( www.soulgeek.com ) is an online community and dating site directed towards avid SciFi, Horror, Fantasy, Animation, and Gamer fans everywhere.
It all started with a Gal.
On June 11th 2006, a Los Angeles area music club called The Mint, hosted a Battlestar Galactica Season 2 CD release party, sponsored by La-La Land Records. This event featured Galactica composer Bear McCreary and the rest of the Galactica musicians (mostly former members of Oingo Boingo) as they played live cuts from the season 2 soundtrack. Emcee for the evening was Actor Richard Hatch and the composer for the original Battlestar Galactica, Stu Philips, was a special guest.
And that’s where the Gal comes in.
This particular Gal had driven in from San Diego to attend the event, and when she saw this happy Fan-Guy/Fan-Gal couple she couldn’t help but with a tiny smile remark in a wistful tone:
“I hope I can find a Geek of my own here.â€
This struck the couple. And when the event was over they couldn’t help but wonder about that Girl. She was young, she was pretty, AND she was enough of a Fan-Gal to drive all the way from San Diego to Los Angeles for a Battlestar Galactica event. That kind of Fan-Gal should have had Fan-Guys falling all over themselves to date her. And yet, here she was hoping to find someone.
This got the couple wondering about what online resources were out there specifically designed to network and bring fans just like her together. What they found wasn’t very encouraging. The Fan-Guy observed that there didn’t seem to be much where the world of Fandom and all its many facets were truly understood - something “huge†where you can tell that the creators really get the passion behind being a fan.†And to this, his Fan-Gal asked: “Then why don’t you create one?â€
So with that little nudge, and the words of a Fan-Gal from San Diego as inspiration, work on SOULGEEK.COM began.
Knowing that Fan-Guys and Fan-Gals can spot a pretender a mile away, it was decided to build the project from the ground up almost entirely from scratch. The scope of the project proved to be so massive, with so much original code being written, that at times it required up to four full-time coders working around the clock. These coders worked in concert with a team of designers that included one chief designer, three artists and two writers – Fan-Guys and Fan-Gals all – who dedicated themselves to making Soul Geek a reality! With a lot of coffee, Chinese food, Otter Pops and a tiny apartment converted into a design office (with four computers that were always humming into the wee hours), SOULGEEK.COM was born in July of 2007 – just over a year after that fateful concert!
Soul Geek is not a sub-division of some giant dating service out to cash in on geeks. We truly are a homegrown community created and run by fans just like you! Geeks who love it all, from Movies, Books, Comics, and Collectibles - to Anime, Video Games, Cosplay, Fan-Art & Fan-Fic... and moreover, Geeks who feel “at home†with the world of passionate fandom found at conventions around the globe!
And we never forget, that it all started with a Gal…
