The Shake ’em Ups

About Me

Featuring a unique mix of bluegrass, swing, honky-tonk, and old-time music, the Shake 'em Ups deliver a show as varied and exiting as the landscapes upon which the American tradition of acoustic music is founded. Drawing from classical, jazz and rock 'n roll backgrounds, these three, young, multi-instrumentalists present acoustic music on their own terms. With a repertoire that ranges from blazing instrumentals to sweet brother-style harmonies; from well-weathered traditionals to original compositions; the Shake 'em Ups put their own exhilarating, virtuosic, and crowd-pleasing twist on traditional American music.

“The Shake ‘em Ups showcases acoustic levity, but not in place of stellar picking, jockeying between Dave Dudley country, Django gypsy jazz, and straight-up bluegrass.”
---Dante, www.Austin.com
"The lo-fi debut from Austin's Shake 'Em Ups unloads an infectious fury of strings, the trio chugging acoustic rhythms braced by banjo, Dobro, mandolin, and Andrew Austin-Petersen's stellar stand-up bass. Fusing old-time, swing, and jazz on solid folk footing, traditionals like "Jesse James" and "Hand Me Down My Walking Cane" mix with the "Six Days on the Road" send-up "School Bus Driver" and blazing instrumentals. "
---Doug Freeman, Austin Chronicle
“The band had the Sam's Burger Joint Honky-Tonk Happy Hour crowd on its side with hot licks and lots of crowd-pleasing banter.”
---Jim Beal, San Antonio Express-News
"These gentleman don’t pussyfoot their way through folk music."
---The Boot, Norfolk, VA
"In a land where Django and Doc Watson host a jam with the Seeger family, The Shake Em Ups are rattling the new string band tradition, burning through some bluegrass standards, and adding some original zest for fun. Prepare your flat-footing"
---Adam Harris, Freelance Music Writer
"The real deal here with an upright bass under breezy harmonies"
---Jerome Spencer, Portfolio Weekly Norfolk, VA
"I don't even like music, but you guys were awesome!"- Richmond Girl
