I was born in Detroit, Michigan, oh, soooooooo long ago! I grew up with Motown, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder (Fingertips!), Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, Four Tops and the Queen!, my fave, Aretha Franklin in my blood!
Well, I love the stage and performing, whether singing or acting. I have been doing so since I was a wee one. I am founder, proprietor, researcher, writer and performer in my own company LOCAL COMMOTION WALKING HISTORY (lcommotion.com). Local Commotion does historical/educational (and FUN) programs and presentations on American Women and now, jazz and blues presentations.
I love all my programs and the super SUPER friends, Diane Wran -Farris and Lorraine Stone who perform with me. One of my favorite's, though is The Blues and Jazz Queens Tribute. I get to sing, and tell the audience all about some of the incredible women in blues and jazz. And there still are amazing and talented women in these fabulous genres!
Now Local Commotion has added fantastic musical programs- Made in America! Listen and learn - there are programs about slave and code songs, civil war songs to civil rights songs, all sung a cappella. Then there are blues, jazz or gospel programs. From acapella to a quartet of musicians, these programs bring it all to life.
I also have the pleasure of being the Director Jersey Shore Jazz & Blues Foundation's (jsjbf.org) Jazz and Blues Youth Project, a mentoring program for teens and young adults who wish and who love to play blues and jazz. I work with a great TEAM, Patti Wade is our Project Coordinator/documentarian, and Saxophonist, Everald Williams is our Project Musical Director. We work hard and long for this program, BUT man, oh, man, we do so enjoy it and enjoy watching the program grow! The young people we have in the program are absolutely super!!
WE ARE PROUD RECIPIENTS of an out of circle Grant from the GERALDINE DODGE FOUNDATION! YEY, for the Youth Project members, their super supportive parents and the Youth Project TEAM and our two great Grant writers, Nicky and Andy.
