July 11, 1981, marked the day I physically came into existence. From a youngsta, I always knew that there was something different about me. I always seemed to march to the sound of a different drum beat and didn't mind being "out of line." My passion for music and cultural arts were instilled in me at very tender age and as I grew, so did my love for artistic expression. I started writing poetry in grammar school and performed most of my pieces at my church. My church family was very supportive of my talents and always encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a world-renowned poet and scholar. By the time I reached my adolescent years, I was introduced to Hip Hop. TLC were my idols and I wanted desparately to be apart of their group. For every song they recorded, I would add my verse. For every outfit they rocked, I would rock the same one. Left Eye was my idol for real. I loved her energy and the way that she delivered her lyrics. I studied her and other female rap artists and began to create my own style. Inspired by Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Bahamadia and Lauryn Hill, I learned very early that it was acceptable to be a female in Hip Hop and not have to compromise my style or overcompensate my feminity. Throughout high school I participated in many talent shows and city-wide showcases in my hometown, St. Louis. But it was not until I went off to college at Xavier University in New Orleans that I truly began exposing my lyrical gifts. I was afforded many opportunities in New Orleans. I appeared on B.E.T. three times, one of which was an opening act for Comic View. In addition, I won many poetry slams, talent shows and appeared on a host of mixtapes and compilations and even completed several independent albums. I am currently finishing up a Master's program at the University of Phoenix and plan to start my own film production company. I love performing and over the years I have really transformed and evolved into a pretty decent emcee and spoken word artist; in addition, and I also love making documentaries and music videos. So, whether they call me Ainoku Saadiq or Aja La'Starr, I am who I am and who I am is me. Peace and blessings.Sistahspeak Honors Angela Scott

Sounds Like: Ainoku don't really sound like anyone in particular. She has a real edgy flow and is definitely reminiscent of earlier hip hop stars.

This feeling...

I am so in denial right now.  There is an emptiness I'm feeling that is indescribable.  I hope that this is not real.  I hope to wake from this nightmare.
